Job Seekers: Never quit!
Often during a long three-day holiday weekend many people take the time to reflect on what's important in their lives. Winding down and enjoying time with family and friends away from the stress and chaos of day-to-day work life is a great way to reinvigorate goals and visions for your life.
I also know that this Labor Day may have been bittersweet for those that are unemployed or for those that are unhappy with their careers.
Our jobs and our career aspirations are such a big part of our identity. Think about it: We put so much of our energy and our lives and our passion into our jobs. Yet for those that are unemployed, it is so difficult right now - it is like a great part of their identity is put on hold.
It is particularly tough for those that have not had to look for a job in a long time. For many it feels as if it's back to square one - trying to convince someone to believe in you and give you a chance; trying so hard not to appear desperate, but at the same time, with each passing week, the understandable waves of fear, insecurity and helplessness.
For those who are struggling, I want you to realize that it does get better.
YOU WILL GET HIRED!
While your struggles may seem insurmountable at times, also realize your job search is part of a greater life journey. Many job seekers have looked at their job search as a way to finally become happy in their careers and use their situation as a path to new discoveries about themselves and about their true goals. I've seen so many cases of job seekers where things have worked out in different ways than what they originally thought; in most cases, their success was the result of some serious, diligent and hard work that required them to take inventory of their goals and visions for their lives and mapping out a plan to achieve their dreams.
Think about a time in your life in which you've struggled or had to call on a great strength inside of yourself to overcome what seemed insurmountable odds. We've all had them. Apply that same level of fire-in-the belly, never-give-up determination to your current obstacle - finding a job - and you will see how your attitude begins to change from one of frustration to one of 'nothing can stop me!'
If you are having a hard time getting motivated or have felt really down about your job search lately, I encourage you to print this poem and tape it next to your computer. It's just a simple poem that has encouraged a lot of people.
NEVER QUIT
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

The Spirituals Project
www.spiritualsproject.org
Started in Denver, the Spirituals Project is a broad-based initiative to explore the many, varied dimensions of African American spirituals as art form, tradition and tool; and to invite all people to experience the joy and power of this dynamic music and gift from African Americans to the world.
Spirituals uplift in times of crisis, heal, comfort, inspire and instill hopes and dreams, thereby transforming individuals, communities, and whole societies. Our goal is to ensure that the spirituals will be passed on for many generations to come.
Although The Spirituals Project was not formally incorporated until December, 1998, the organization has its roots in activities that date back more than seven years previously. These activities included educational concert, lecture and workshop programs and the development of an educational public television documentary film. These varied activities provided the background and impetus for the establishment of The Spirituals Project as a formal educational organization.
Beginning in early 1991, Spirituals Project founder Arthur Jones and his piano accompanist Ingrid Thompson began to conduct a series of concert, lecture and workshop programs on the spirituals, which are the religious folk songs created and first sung by African Americans in slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries. The purpose of these programs was to provide education about these songs, in an effort to preserve an important American cultural treasure.
The first of these programs was presented at the Denver Museum of Natural History in February, 1991, at the invitation of the community outreach coordinator at the Museum. The program was part of the Museum's annual African American Heritage Month programming. Other programs followed, beginning in community and church settings across the Front Range of Colorado and eventually including community, church and conference settings around the country. The programs ranged from one to three hours in length, and all combined actual performance of spirituals with educational presentations on the cultural and historical significance of the spirituals tradition.
The Founding of The Spirituals Project
By 1996 it was clear that there was a great need for education about the spirituals tradition and their history. With the encouragement of the initial panel of academic advisors who had been helping to develop the concepts for a documentary film, Arthur Jones founded The Spirituals Project. An enthusiastic panel of community people in Denver volunteered to serve as the Steering Committee of this organization, which was envisioned as a broad-based educational initiative to expand the work begun by Jones in the previous few years. The aim of The Spirituals Project is to both initiate and provide sponsorship for a wide program of activities which all have the goal of offering public audiences an understanding of the history and continuing cultural functions of the spirituals in the United
States and abroad.
Arthur Jones has continued to present concert and lecture programs, and The Spirituals Project is now recruiting additional artists, scholars and speakers as part of a pool of resource people who can be called on to do concert and lecture programs in Colorado and nationwide. The Spirituals Project has also initiated a training program to expand the pool of speakers who can do presentations in schools, churches, and a variety of other community settings.
