Comcast Cares Day Brightens Colorado!
In the many conversations I have with job seekers, one reminder I always give them in terms of considering a new job is this: a good indication of whether the company is a good employer, is the way it interacts in the community it serves and how it encourages its employees to participate in their communities.
Saturday morning, my wife Christine asked if I could attend an event at Mi Casa, the nonprofit she leads. She told me that 40 Comcast employees were volunteering their Saturday to work on a landscaping and painting project at Mi Casa as part of Comcast's annual Comcast Cares Day.

I didn't know a lot about Comcast Cares Day until I showed up at the Comcast Cares kickoff and found myself surrounded by hundreds of Comcast employees and their families who were being distributed to volunteer at nonprofits throughout the Denver community. Comcast's Senior Vice President Scott Binder and Executive Vice President David Cohen joined Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Senator Michael Bennet along with United Way's Christine Benero, Denver's Road Home Jamie VanLeeuwen and Denver Health's Paula Herzmark at the kickoff. After the ceremony, they planted several trees at Denver Health's Rita Bass Trauma Center.
“There is nothing more rewarding than giving back, and I’m grateful to the 3,000 Comcast Cares Day volunteers who donated their time to help make such a big difference,” said Comcast's Scott Binder.
"A good company, like Comcast, is always striving to make its community better," Mayor Hickenlooper said. "It's not just abo ut putting a great product on a cable channel or about getting a pay check; it's about improving the community every day."

Get this: There were over 3,000 Comcast employees volunteering at more than 30 nonprofits in communities throughout the entire state and over 50,000 Comcast employees were volunteering at projects nationwide - one of the largest single days of corporate volunteer efforts in the country! Comcast Cares Day reached community organizations across Colorado with volunteer crews working at sites from Windsor to Avon to Trinidad.
At Mi Casa, Comcast's Human Resources team worked energetically from early morning until late af ternoon painting the interiors of Mi Casa and taking on a massive landscaping project in front of Mi Casa. The hundreds of donated volunteer hours were also matched with hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated supplies by Comcast. There was no way that small nonprofits like Mi Casa could have afforded to make these facility improvements. All in all, Mi Casa estimated that the entire day's work including volunteer hours and supplies translated into thousands of dollars that gave Mi Casa a much-needed and deserved facelift.
David Cohen, Comcast's Executive Vice President who oversees Community Affairs, showed up and pitched in and even though it was a chilly morning, there were no complaints and everyone enthusiastically contributed to the project.
As I painted alongside several "Comcasters" at Mi Casa, they shared with me that the emphasis on corporate culture and nurturing an environment of community in the workplace definitely creates a broader sense of purpose and fulfillment in their daily jobs with Comcast. One of the HR executives told me that the Comcast Cares initiative brings employees together who look forward to this annual event and are actively involved in organizing the effort.
Thanks and congratulations to all Comcast employees and their families!
