Getting to Hired!
One of the most common difficulties amongst job seekers is understanding what employers want when they post a job. Anyone who has ever hired a new employee starts off with a picture in their mind of what constitutes the ideal candidate for that particular position. The job description offers a lot of clues (qualifications, years of experience, etc.) and that is where it is up to you to create the argument in your resume and cover letter as to why your skills are the most relevant to the job you are applying. What creates that connection between the job posting and their relevant skills will have the most likely chance of getting an interview.
But at a job interview, there are specific unwritten qualities that will differentiate you from your competition and give you an advantage in getting the job offer. Employers want to make sure that you have a passion for what you do, a strong desire to fill the open position and they also need to have confidence that you'd be a loyal and contributing member of their staff.
How do you get there?
Of the hundreds of successful job seekers I’ve interviewed, the common strategies are this:
1.) Research the company. Employers want to see you've taken the time to get to know them. It is imperative that you understand what they do, their challenges and goals and why they need someone with your skills. Research their industry and their competitors and most importantly, try to get a sense of their corporate culture. This is not only important for your interview, it's critical to understand to make sure that it is a company that fits YOUR values and is a place where you see yourself being happy.
2.) Anticipate the questions that will be asked and prepare responses in advance. In every job posting, there are at least five things that you can easily determine will be asked at an interview to judge your fitness for the job. You need to bring with you to the interview specific anecdotes that outline your accomplishments, experiences, projects and skills that will connect your relevance to the specific job posting.
3.) Turn a one-sided interview into a two-way conversation. Be prepared to ask questions so you can demonstrate your knowledge, your passion for your chosen career and to demonstrate how your skills will bring value to the company. Also use my bridging techniques to help lead you into your comfort areas when answering difficult questions.
4.) Relax! Successful job seekers have a rock solid confidence in what they bring to the table. They don’t have to pretend they are an arrogant 'jack-of-all trades' or on the flip side, appear as if they are desperately trying to fit themselves into skills and qualifications they simply don’t possess. Believe in yourself and in your abilities and the value you offer. Be prepared to discuss how your skills are relevant to the position you are applying and show how you would add value by discussing your past accomplishments and success.
