Job Description: 

Since 1990, the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County (“I Have A Dream”) has helped over 1,000 children from low-income areas achieve their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. Currently, there are 12 “I Have A Dream” cohorts in Boulder County, in Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette and Carbon Valley. “I Have A Dream” has 32 staff members, 38 AmeriCorps members and an annual budget of $4,083,000. The “I Have A Dream” program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder, Eugene Lang. Since then, 200 programs nationwide have helped more than 17,000 students. GENERAL PURPOSE: Given that “I Have A Dream” does not charge tuition or fees for any of its services, all expenses are covered entirely by philanthropic support and community partnerships. In coordination with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Development team, and the Board of Directors’ Fundraising and Marketing Committees, the Director of Development will manage a variety of fundraising and marketing efforts of the organization in order to meet annual revenue and long-term development goals, with FY19 revenue goals of $4M+. Position is a full-time exempt position and reports directly to the CEO, managing a team of 3+ employees (Development Manager, Grants Manager and Development Associate position(s), while collaborating with Vice President of Donor Relations.)

Areas of Responsibility
  • Implement an overall comprehensive, strategic, goal-based development plan to attract, build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial relationships with individuals and corporations capable of contributing significantly to “I Have A Dream.” Estimated 25% of time spent on these responsibilities.
    • Oversee the production of mail and electronic annual solicitation campaigns, including a Graduation Appeal, Giving Tuesday, Colorado Gives Day, and holiday direct mail appeal.
    • Coordinate Corporate Underwriting Dream-Maker Campaign.
    • Administer and maintain donor database; acquire new lists of names; track donation renewals and develop ways to keep donors involved and moving to higher levels of giving, and assure acknowledgement letters sent.
    • Support the CEO and Donor Relations staff in cultivating individual donors. Methods may include but are not limited to regular correspondence, phone communication, personal invitations, regular and special site tours, donor appreciation events, and face-to-face meetings.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement all Special Events with assistance from Development Staff and event committees.  Estimated 50% of time spent on these responsibilities.
    • Lead the planning and implementation of two Signature Fundraising Events – the Dream-Maker Breakfast and Luncheon, developing event program, coordinating speakers and special guests, overseeing video and visual aid production, overseeing print and online materials production, overseeing event logistics, and coordinating with vendors and stakeholders.
    • Oversee the planning and implementation of other fundraising events, including the annual Corks for College Event, Golf Tournament, Holiday Dreams Gift Drive, Donor Appreciation Event and other events as assigned.
    • Manage event follow-up calls and engagement with event attendees.
    • As needed, collaborate and partner with Board of Directors, marketing/fundraising committees, and event committee members/chairs in implementing these events and approving printed materials.
  • Oversee and implement Marketing and Public Relations efforts of organization. Estimated 20% of time spent on these responsibilities.
    • Implement a marketing, social media and public relations plan to ensure consistent, quality marketing and community relations materials for the organization.
    • Generate annual report & print newsletter, and monthly e-newsletter.
    • Update and enhance “I Have A Dream’s” website and social media platforms.
    • Create or supervise creation of print ads in local newspapers on a roughly monthly basis.
  • Support Board of Directors and Emerging Leaders Board in fundraising efforts. Estimated 5% of time spent on these responsibilities.
    • Attend all board meetings as requested.
    • Serve as staff liaison for Board’s fundraising committees and Emerging Leaders Board.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of nonprofit fundraising techniques, especially large event management, individual donor cultivation, public relations, and marketing, with demonstrated ability soliciting major gifts and developing strategies for others to solicit major gifts.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to build, manage, mentor, and motivate an effective team (including Development Manager, Grants Manager, and Development Associate), providing strong support and opportunity for growth and development.
  • Understanding of general accounting practices, budget management, and financial management.
  • Proficiency with G-Suite, MS Excel & Word, Acrobat, InDesign, and Powerpoint, and experience using Salesforce database for tracking donations and supporter information, and analyzing fundraising data with intent to create best practices.
  • Experience with developing and implementing social media outreach.
  • Experience with website maintenance using WordPress a plus.
  • Ability to manage projects and be flexible, organized, and goal-oriented in a fast-paced, sometimes high-intensity environment.
  • Proven track record of excellence, diplomacy, and sound judgment, with ability to effectively engage, influence, and leverage a wide range of stakeholders in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of key prospects and donors.
  • Substantial knowledge of the Boulder County philanthropic community, with ability and desire to connect with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  • Strong passion for the work of “I Have A Dream,” and the ability to effectively articulate the organization’s vision to a diverse audience of community members.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in nonprofit management, business management, marketing, or fundraising, with proven track record in successful fundraising.
  • Minimum five to seven years experience in nonprofit development/fundraising, or in a related field such as business sales/public relations.
  • Minimum five to seven years of supervisory experience.
  • Minimum three years experience in a high-level position soliciting individuals and corporations at the major and special gifts level.
  • Needs to be able to work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings and appointments in locations and times when public transportation is unavailable.
  • Some weekend and evening hours required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
Compensation/Benefits
  • Salary range for this position is $60,000 – $68,000 depending upon experience.
