Organizational Background

The Arc Arapahoe, Douglas & Elbert Counties (The Arc ADE) is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing advocacy, information, and support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. The Arc ADE provides services that promote the general welfare of people with I/DD. These services include advocacy, public awareness, training, community outreach, public policy, and referral to resources.

The Arc ADE believes in what Congress stated in the Reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act: …”disability is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminishes the rights of individuals to live independently, enjoy self-determination, make choices, contribute to society, pursue meaningful careers, and enjoy full inclusion and integration in the economic, political, social, cultural and educational mainstream of American society”.

As a local chapter of The Arc of the United States, a nationwide organization of 140,000 individuals with disabilities, parents, and professionals in the field, The Arc ADE works to promote the rights and welfare of people with disabilities. The organization is laser focused on advocating for individuals with I/DD. The Arc ADE staff, board, and volunteers care deeply about the individuals and families they serve.

Position Summary

The Executive Director, in partnership with the Board of Directors, develops and guides the successful execution of the strategic plan for The Arc ADE. This role will require attendance outside regular business hours where the Executive Director's appearance will support the community and promote The Arc of ADE culture. Additionally, the Executive Director is expected to travel for local, state and interstate meetings, events, symposiums and conferences.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Public Policy: The Executive Director represents The Arc ADE and its stakeholders with state and federal legislatures, state departments, and county administrations. The E.D. collaborates with leaders and stakeholders in the field to address systemic issues in education, healthcare, employment, housing, transportation, and other matters important to the population served by The Arc ADE.
  • Community Investment: The E.D. maintains and enhances strong relationships with local chapters of The Arc in Colorado and attends Colorado Executive of The Arc Chapters (CEARC) meetings, building strong relationships with key stakeholders in Colorado.
  • Board Governance: The E.D. prepares and organizes monthly board meetings, providing information and counsel to the Board.
  • Leadership: The E.D. leads and maintains an organizational culture that attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse staff of highly qualified, knowledgeable individuals who embrace the values of The Arc ADE.
  • Organizational Management: The E.D. manages the finances of The Arc ADE, including the development, implementation, and ongoing review of the annual budget.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be willing to jump into situations to assist members, staff and families going through difficult situations and listen fully to the needs of stakeholders, families, guardians, and staff.
Professional qualifications required for this role include:

  • Previous experience helping individuals with I/DD and their families understand their rights and responsibilities in government-funded systems of care
  • Experience with advocacy and the legislative process, as well as the ability to form strong relationships with people in key governmental, advocacy, and legislative positions
  • 5+ years of management experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Outstanding collaborative skills among a diverse population, including persons with I/DD and their families, legislators, other state executives, and staff
  • Knowledge of Medicaid and long-term care services and supports
  • Strong background in advocacy or public policy
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting
  • Fundraising skills and experience

Personal attributes preferred for this role include:

  • Approachable personality, able to work well with staff, families, and a volunteer Board of Directors
  • Experience with and affinity for a flat organizational structure
  • Personal or professional experience advocating for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities
  • Confident yet humble leadership style
  • Ability to effectively interact with board, co-workers, clients, and volunteers with diverse abilities, ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds and sexual orientation, treating each person with respect and dignity

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $140,000 – $150,000. This position is eligible for bonuses.
