The Daily Sentinel, a 20,000-circulation, award-winning newspaper in western Colorado, seeks a versatile, hard-working general assignment reporter.
The reporter will have an opportunity to write a variety of stories, with two primary areas of focus: county government and feature writing.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field. The reporter must have strong reporting and writing skills, be well-versed in AP style, possess the ability to shoot photos and shoot and edit video, and be comfortable working in social media.
We want a motivated, aggressive self-starter whose reporting on county government extends beyond meetings to cover issues and trends in this growing part of western Colorado and explain why they matter and how they affect the public. You must be able to turn crisp, clean writing on deadline, as well as pursue in-depth, enterprising stories. The ability to develop sources is critical.
The reporter will also write a variety of features — human-focused profiles and trend pieces — for our Sunday Lifestyle section. You need to be able to plug into the community and connect with readers.
The Daily Sentinel is located in Grand Junction, the largest city between Denver and Salt Lake City and a growing regional hub for higher education, shopping, business, health care and transportation. The area is an outdoor recreation mecca that offers beautiful scenery, a high quality of life and less traffic and cheaper housing than many areas of the state.
The position offers a competitive salary, full benefits and a 401(k) plan.
Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, references and writing samples to Managing Editor Dale Shrull via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. No calls, please.
