This season's projects will restore/rehabilitate multiple historic log, stone, adobe, and frame buildings that were originally used as ranches, historic summer homes, ranger stations, fire lookout towers and more. The buildings are all remotely located on America’s spectacular public lands (Bureau Land Management, National Park Service, United States Forest Service, state lands). While most sites are accessible by high clearance vehicles, some require a hike to access the sites.
Project Supervisors are responsible for everything related to, and everyone on, their respective work sites. Duties include:
- Prepare sites and plan project-related tasks for arrival of crews;
- Work with, provide on-the-job training for, and coordinate tasks for unskilled and semiskilled volunteers and students;
- Supervise up to 3 paid crew (most typically 1);
- Supervise crews of up to 18 volunteers (most typically 6-8);
- Camp onsite in primitive lodging, ensure a clean and safe campsite and toilet facilities, and be responsible for the welfare of everyone camping onsite;
- Supervise sub-contractors;
- Manage all jobsite and campsite activities;
- Purchase building materials;
- Deliver timesheets, volunteer reports, and project photographs in timely manner to home office;
- Adhere to and promote work safety standards;
- Provide a positive learning environment;
- Complete projects and oversee cleanup to a “leave no trace” standard (other than the preservation work just completed!).
Project Supervisors will be expected to work long days in variable weather, live in a remote and/or backcountry setting (i.e., tents) for up to 14 days at a time. Project Supervisors must have previous leadership experience instructing crews, ideally in remote or backcountry settings.

- Enjoy teaching others about historic preservation skills and techniques;
- Possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record;
- Possess a journeyman’s knowledge of hand tools and the historic building trades;
- Have experience in rehabilitating/restoring log, frame, and/or adobe structures (NOTE: Please list past projects that you supervised, and describe the scope of work and skill needed for these projects);
- Have a working knowledge of, and practical experience with, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties;
- Possess strong communication, management and conflict resolution skills
