Position Description
The Academic Recovery Advisor and Academic Advising Trainer is a key position in the undergraduate academic advising community at MSU Denver and will work in Advising Systems. This individual will provide academic advising to undergraduate students who are on Academic Recovery (formerly probation) for areas in the academic advising program where there is a vacancy in an existing position line a college/school/program. In addition to advising students on Academic Recovery, this position will work closely with the Advising Coordinator for Training and Development and Advising Coordinator for Technology and Support to support or lead trainings for academic advisors. This position reports to the Director of Advising Systems.
Position Responsibilities
50% Academic advising for students on Academic Recovery
- Conduct advising sessions with students who are on Academic Recovery when there is an advisor vacancy in a college/school or Exploratory Advising. This will include discussing academic standing, assisting with course selection, recommending course repeats or Fresh Start, fielding scheduling and registration questions using advising-based technology.
- Remove registration encumbrances for students on Academic Recovery.
- Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system.
- Refer students to appropriate University resources.
- Utilize advising-based systems to track and engage temporarily assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert).
- Deliver appropriate student-centered outreach with a lens toward diversity and inclusivity.
- Manage case alerts on students that the advisor is temporarily advising.
40% Academic Advising Training
- In collaboration with the Advising Coordinator for Training and Development, develop and/or implement inclusive university-wide and profession-driven training opportunities for new and continuing advisors that align with the mission and goals of the University’s advising program.
- Effectively build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders toward the goal of collaboration and effective resource management related to advisor training.
- Teach professional advisors about advising based systems and how to best utilize them in their work with students (e.g. Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, suite of Student Success Collaborative products, etc.)
- Support advising technology, or technology impacting advisors, through testing/auditing in partnership with the Advising Coordinator for Technology and Support.
- Create and implement training materials that are student forward facing.
- Hold virtual or in-person trainings/workshops with academic advisors or students as needed.
10% Other Duties as Assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience as a full-time academic advisor
- A year or more of experience working with students who are academically at-risk of not being retained (students who have a GPA below 2.0).
- A year or more of experience leading or implementing training in a college/university or other educational setting.
- Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
- Experience working with a student success CRM system (Customer Relationship Management). Examples include, but are not limited to, EAB’s Navigate360, Starfish, etc…
- Demonstrated experience with advising techniques or approaches at an accredited institution.
- Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
- Three years or more of experience working with students who are academically at-risk of not being retained (students who have a GPA below 2.0).
- Three years or more of experience leading or implementing training in a college/university or other educational setting.
- Three years or more of experience working with a CRM system (Customer Relationship Management). Examples include, but are not limited to, EAB’s Navigate360, Starfish, etc…
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
Salary for Announcement
Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $45,300 – $56,600. The full salary range is $45,300 – $68,000.
This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
