Position Description



OBUSA’s Alumni Manager will manage all aspects of the newly launched Outward Bound national alumni program, which includes serving as the primary point of contact for key stakeholders inside and outside the Outward Bound USA organization and its 11 regional Schools. Internal stakeholders include the Alumni Steering Committee and network of regional Schools; external stakeholders include Outward Bound alumni and alumni groups as well as the third-party vendors who support the program; e.g. database, on-line store merchants, etc.


This position will report to the OBUSA Chief Advancement Officer and will have line of sight connections with the OBUSA National Brand and Marketing Director and the OBUSA Executive Director.  As part of the OBUSA Advancement team, the Alumni Manager will work in close coordination with other OBUSA Advancement activities including major donor cultivation events, Invitational (guest) expeditions, and major national events. The Alumni Manager also works in close partnership with Outward Bound’s marketing operations as managed by the Outward Bound Services Group (OBSG), specifically as related to the execution of outbound-inbound alumni communications using national media platforms and channels. Lastly, the Alumni Manager will be responsible for engaging and collaborating with OB system-wide groups including any national Alumni committees, the National Development Officers Group (NDOG), the Marketing Services Group and others as appropriate.

Fundamentally, the new position of Alumni Manager for OBUSA presents an opportunity to engage a highly passionate audience (Outward Bound Alumni) eager to continue their Outward Bound experience through a variety of means: regional service projects, additional Outward Bound course participation, special Alumni expeditions, mentoring onboarding Outward Bound students or donating to issues and scholarships important to them.


Functions and Responsibilities


Outward Bound USA’s National Alumni Program

  • Manage and participate as a key contributor on the design, development and implementation of Outward Bound’s national Alumni Program
  • Support and implement the elements of the Alumni Program as defined by the Executive Director, the Chief Advancement Officer and the National Director of Brand and Marketing from early stage program design, informed by participation and input from OB regional schools
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day to day management of the National Alumni Program for external partners (i.e. vendors), internal stakeholders (i.e. regional Schools, MSG, NDOG, OBSG) and alumni
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for coordination of alumni events as defined in the Alumni Program plan
  • Partner and collaborate with appropriate internal groups – including OBSG and regional schools as appropriate – to develop ‘products and experiences’ for Alumni
  • Work with OBUSA Development Coordinator to track donor and prospect activity, progress and stewardship actions (data entry may be required to maintain donor/prospect record integrity)
  • Manage and guide effective engagement of a national Alumni Committee to assure active buy-in and advocacy for the program across the OBUSA national network
  • Collaborate with national Alumni committee and other national groups, together with regional OB schools, to assure alignment, eliminate redundancy or competition with regional school alumni programs


Collaborative Team Support

  • Support Chief Advancement Officer and the OBUSA Advancement team in achieving annual fundraising goals as appropriate
  • Participate as appropriate with Advancement and Marketing (OBSG) team meetings, calls and activities
  • Serve as the primary integration point for Alumni with OBSG to manage, update and leverage the alumni section of the national website and to utilize national media platforms to engage with alumni; i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat.
  • Partner with OBSG in the annual communication planning process so that alumni communications and use of national media platforms is seamless and coherent for the range of external audiences Outward Bound is attempting to reach.
  • Assure that the alumni communications align with, support and strengthen the Outward Bound brand.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support OBUSA Advancement activities as necessary
  • Assist OBUSA Marketing with content creation and management as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Basic marketing, program development and non-profit organization principles and practices
  • Highly organized, detail oriented with strong previous project management experience
  • Effective communication, both written and oral
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member
  • Experience and competency working effectively across multiple working groups, divisions or businesses
  • Prior experience working with 3rd party technology vendors in development of websites, mobile apps and other customer engagement platforms
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency creating presentation materials; use of ppt, etc.
  • At least 5+ years’ experience in Alumni, membership or outreach/engagement program development and/or management or similar
  • Passion for the values and mission of Outward Bound  
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or equivalent experience

  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 pounds
