The Advancement operation provides the management and coordination of the back office functions to support the campus-based fundraising field staff. These include research, marketing and communications, gift processing, database management, gift planning, and other services. These central services produce economies of scale by eliminating the need for these back office functions to be duplicated on each of the four campuses. They also place the institution in an optimal position to attract substantial support from the philanthropic sector.

The Associate Director of Gift Planning is a centralized University of Colorado (CU) system position embedded within the CU Boulder Office of Advancement. This position works closely with the CU Boulder Senior Director of Gift Planning and the broader CU Gift Planning team to enhance the giving experience by supporting donors and development officers as they explore major and planned gift opportunities.

This position reports to the CU Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning and Annual Giving and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff System.
Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 
  • Works within the CU Boulder Advancement office to cultivate and support gifts that benefit CU by providing technical gift planning expertise to colleagues and donors
  • Collaborates with CU Advancement staff to cultivate, solicit, negotiate, and close gifts by focusing primarily on multi-faceted outright gifts; gifts of complex or unique assets; gifts-in-kind; revocable designations; and irrevocable gifts such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, retained life estates, or charitable lead trusts
  • Contributes to University system, campus, and department goals by supporting the implementation of an annual gift planning workplan, including specific areas of focus such as: proactive lead generation to create a strong future “pipeline” of planned gift prospects or donors; prospect strategy sessions; trainings; stewardship of existing legacy society members; marketing efforts; strengthening relationships with the advisor community; prospect strategy sessions; proposal creation; gifts-in-kind support; donor visits/travel; etc.
  • Supports system-level gift planning efforts as assigned, such as database maintenance, counting standards, gift acceptance policies, estate distribution efforts, policies and procedures, etc. 
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned

  • Microsoft Office Products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Gift planning software, such as PGM Anywhere, TIAA Kaspick GiftAdvisor
  • Donor tracking and reporting software, such as Ellucian Advance, Salesforce
  • Smart phones
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:
  • Knowledge of the University of Colorado’s mission, demographics, faculty, current programs, departments, and culture 
  • Knowledge of gift planning principles, procedures, and best practices

  • Skilled in the use of computer equipment, software, and other relevant technology (smart phones, etc.) including the Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

  • Ability to make persuasive verbal and written cases for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospective donors to specific university needs

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three (3) years’ experience securing major and/or planned gifts, fundraising, acting as a financial planner, or directly comparable work
  • Ability to travel
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education (e.g. Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctorate, Master of Arts, etc.) 
  • Five (5) years’ experience securing major and/or planned gifts, fundraising, acting as a financial planner, or directly comparable work
  • Professional certification (e.g. Certified Financial Planner) 
  • Experience in a nonprofit, higher education, or healthcare environment
  • Experience working within large, complex organizations
