Job Description: 

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will work with the CEO to shape and execute fundraising strategies for ACE National, while providing oversight of all ACE State development activities. The CDO will develop a comprehensive annual and multi-year national fundraising plan that includes major gifts, corporate and foundation engagement, and planned giving strategies. The CDO will work with the CEO to engage major gifts in new markets, as well as nationally, and also collaborate with the Vice President of Communications to develop a comprehensive development communications plan, including direct mail and online giving. The CDO will also be responsible for all other team functions, including support given to major gift officers, event logistics and planning, prospecting and research, grant writing, and other operational needs.

Areas of Responsibility
  1. Development Strategy and Execution.
    • Develop and manage the execution of a comprehensive annual and multi-year national fundraising plan to meet the revenue goals of the organization that utilizes numerous development strategies, including individual major gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundations, direct mail, planned giving, small and major events, and advisory board engagement.
    • Collaborate with the Vice President of Communications to develop a comprehensive development communications calendar to engage donors, foundations, and prospects throughout the year.
    • Collaborate and work closely with the CEO to secure major funding from national partner organizations, individuals, corporations and foundations.
    • Monitor philanthropic trends and align fundraising strategies to maximize success.
  2. Senior Leadership.
    • Provide strategic oversight, leadership and mentorship to ACE State major gift officers.
    • Supervise major gift officers, currently seven individuals.
    • Serve as point-person for CEO on all development related issues and activities.
    • Work with COO and CFO to establish revenue projections and support budget development for the national office
    • Hire, train and support a dynamic Development Team for effective implementation of goals.

 3.  Development Operations.

  • Manage a team of development professionals to support local and remote major gift officers and all development activities, including prospect and donor research, data tracking and reporting, direct mail, events, grant writing, planned giving, online crowdfunding campaigns, and all other development activities.

 4. Market Expansion.

  • Support the Executive Team in national expansion strategies to meet organization’s growth objectives.
  • Work with the CEO and Executive Team to establish strategic partnership and acquisition discussions that further the organization’s mission and enhance our presence nationally.
  • 5. Create intentional culture.
    • Support the Executive Team’s efforts to establish a culture of trust and collaboration that incorporates established behaviors and values in an employee engagement strategy.
    • Promote professional development opportunities for each direct report.
  • 7+ years’ experience as a major gift officer or in a similar director role; candidates with experience managing a development office with annual revenues of $30+ million strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • The ability to develop and deliver compelling arguments regarding the qualitative and quantitative benefits of philanthropic investment.
  • Proven ability to develop a multi-year plan that includes a strategy that is well supported by analytics and business cases which lead to success.
  • Hands-on experience in implementing creative and innovative strategies to increase investments/giving levels across each donor segment.
  • Experience in budget development and the ability to develop sound business cases which demonstrate the returns on new initiatives and investments.
  • Strong understanding of current issues and trends in fundraising and corporate social responsibility.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with emphasis on solicitation, building relationships and negotiating capability.
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and task facilitation
  • Strong communication skills, excellent professional appearance and presentation, and public speaking experience
  • Proven ability to manage simultaneous priorities under pressure
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters
  • Strong decision-making skills, along with tact and diplomacy
