Scrum Alliance is a worldwide organization dedicated to transforming the world of work. Scrum Alliance sets the standard of excellence in serving a global Community of leaders, practitioners, and organizations that seek to learn and apply agile practices, principles, and values that create joyful, prosperous, sustainable workplaces.

Scrum Alliance is a not-for-profit professional membership and certification organization in the Agile community. Founded in 2001, Scrum has grown to more than 500,000 certified practitioners worldwide. For 2016, Scrum had annual revenue of over $12 million, with headquarters located outside Denver, CO. The organization currently employs over 30 associates.

The ideal candidate

As our CEO, the ideal candidate will have significant executive leadership experience in similar organizations; be well-known for leading and building strong, collaborative teams; leads with authenticity and self-awareness; has extensive experience driving aggressive strategies in dynamic and rapidly changing industries; and lives with integrity and strong ethics.

But that should be true of any CEO candidate for any organization.

We’re seeking a unique leader, and we want a lot more than that.

The ideal candidate would also have some or all of the following:

Agile mindset: Is passionate about the impact agile has on an organization’s culture, performance and strategy.

Strategist/Visionary: Has demonstrated the ability to implement ambitious and high-impact programs and new concepts in the real world; a creative thinker with a successful track record of shaking up the status quo with demonstrable outcomes from doing so. Knows how to prioritize risks, when to shoot for the moon and when not to. Can provide examples of times when each is preferred, and why they decided so.

Participatory and collaborative leadership style: Experience leveraging a workforce using a blend of staff and volunteers / stakeholders that aren’t staff. Can engage with thought leaders and partners on strategic co-creative activities to develop new programs. Can transparently align incentives and interests to guide the behavior of staff and interested community members.

Cultural experimenter: Has implemented / built a culture based on self-organized teams, and is excited about building an even stronger, world-class organizational collaborative culture at Scrum Alliance and with our community.

Evangelism & communication: Clearly communicates the vision, mission and strategy of Scrum Alliance; inspires staff, the broader agile community and the world at large with the potential of agile transformation. Can eloquently communicate complex topics via analogy, storytelling, logic.

Worldwide experience: A global cultural perspective; the ability to work with leaders from around the world; the ability to fluently adapt to different cultural norms and experiences to build strong relationships. Ideally, has lived and/or worked in multiple regions.

Distribution channel expertise: Experience building and delivering high-quality, scalable programs to geographically dispersed audiences via distance-learning platforms, global networks and other channels.

Data-driven, transparent team leadership: Builds effectiveness in the team based on objective data that’s transparent to the team; designs the organization so that teams can respond to information on their own to drive toward strategic goals.

Bias toward action: Has a bias toward acting and capitalizing on strategic opportunities: Willing to move on opportunities – translating strategy to empowered teams with measurable outcomes – even while significant uncertainty is still present. Fearless in exploiting an opening competitors might not see. Can tolerate the failure that’s inherent in this type of thinking. Learns appropriate lessons from the failures (and successes).

Other considerations

This role requires extensive worldwide travel, perhaps up to 50% of the time.

While Scrum Alliance is a worldwide organization, it is based in Denver, CO; the successful candidate will be required to spend significant time there.
