Job Description: 

The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison (the Alliance) is dedicated to the expansion of quality higher education in prison, empowering students in prison and after release, and shaping public discussion about education and incarceration. The Alliance is a membership-driven network and is fiscally sponsored by Community Partners, which provides a full range of human resources, legal/contracts and financial services, as well as advising, training, and networking opportunities.

The Communication and Community Engagement Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Alliance’s Director and/or Communications Director and other senior staff and consultants to support the Alliance’s efforts to build the higher education in prison community, specifically through special events and convenings, public communication and messaging and working with volunteers. Applicants should be experienced in network building, volunteer and community engagement on a national level and with a non-profit network. Applicants should have expertise managing and creating content for multiple types of communication platforms. Additionally, applicants should be a creative, thoughtful and collaborative colleague, and be in strong alignment with the social, racial and education equity mission of the Alliance.

The Alliance’s main office is located in Denver, CO and the Communication and Community Engagement Coordinator will work on-site with minimal travel required.

Areas of Responsibility

Under the direct supervision of the Director and/or the Communications Director, the Communication and Community Outreach Coordinator will:

  • Develop productive working relationships with community members and stakeholders, including a strong understanding of the landscape of the higher education in prison community;
  • Lead a team of other staff, volunteers and Advisory Board members to plan and implement a national conference and other in-person and on-line trainings and events (conferences, convenings and webinars) for national stakeholders;
  • Support the implementation of the day-to-day activities of the Alliance’s Strategic Communication Plan; 
  • Introduce and connect community partners and stakeholders to each other to enable new collaborations and partnerships and help build the Alliance’s identity as a respected, transparent, inclusive and action-oriented network;
  • Collaborate with other staff to create messaging for various communication outlets and accounts (social media, Listserv, website and print);
  • Manage social media accounts, multi-media website content and distribution of print messaging;
  • Manage logistics for community events (virtual and in-person) and liaise with vendors and community members and volunteers;
  • Manage logistics/communication and work product with communications contractors (videographer, photographer, etc.) to support organizational storytelling efforts (social media, website and print); and
  • Work as a collaborative and supportive colleague to meet the Alliance’s membership and fundraising and goals.
  • 2+ years of communications/community engagement/volunteer management experience with increasing responsibility, ideally within a national non-profit network or organization
  • Demonstrated experience managing and creating messaging for multiple digital platforms
  • Excellent writing, analytical, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills and understanding of and talent for community-oriented communication
  • • Expertise in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and proficiency working with a Content Management Systems strongly preferred
  • • Competent in a graphic design program (e.g., InDesign or Illustrator), a digital photo editing program (e.g., Photoshop or Lightroom) and an audio/visual production program (e.g., Premiere or Final Cut)
  • • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a communication or community engagement-related field
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and deliver commitments in a timely manner
  • Highly relational with strong ability to motivate and build relationships with program and development staff, volunteers, community groups and other stakeholders
  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of the Alliance

The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison provides a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with our size and budget. Starting salary range for the Communication and Community Engagement Coordinator is $50,000-$55,000 annually, depending on skills and experience. Benefits include: health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance, vacation and holiday pay and staff wellness and professional development programs. All employees (full-time, part-time and on-call) may also participate in a 403b retirement plan (commencing on the first day of employment) with an employer contribution and match after two years of 1,000 hours worked each year.
