The communications team is primarily responsible for the external face of NREL corporate communications and all corresponding activities. The right candidate for this job will have proven experience working with the media, crafting engaging social content, monitoring and managing both social and media activity, and developing useful reports tracking relevant KPIs. Most importantly, we’re looking for a self-motivated individual with the ability and enthusiasm to execute the laboratory’s communications strategy and take direction, yet with the ability to think strategically.

 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to file media requests on an almost daily basis, working with press ranging from targeted trade publications, to mainstream news, magazine, and broadcast outlets. You will maintain and create content for established social media accounts with significant reach and engagement across all platforms. Last but not least, you will have the critical task of tracking the performance metrics of all communications activity, regularly reporting results to both team members and executive leadership.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the media relations team to field incoming media requests and connect press to the appropriate researcher or executive spokesperson.
  • Monitor and evaluate media coverage on a daily basis, ensuring timely capture of key articles and relevant data
  • Assist with drafting press releases
  • Create engaging social media content in support of the laboratory’s mission, news, and activities. This includes organic content, ongoing campaigns, and community engagement.
  • Maintain a social posting calendar and scheduling across all social platforms.
  • Create monthly reports and metrics reporting across multiple groups: media, social, website, visitors, and more.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of relevant communications, marketing, public relations, and/or advertising experience. Agency experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in planning and implementing a full range of traditional and digital communication strategies and campaigns. 
  • Excellent organization, project management, interpersonal, and communication skills.  
  • Competency with using social media management platforms like Sprout Social or Hootsuite. 
  • Competency using media monitoring and wire service distribution like Meltwater or Cision.
  • History of writing press releases and other media collateral, with the ability to provide examples.
  • Proven ability to create executive-quality analytics reports for a diverse range of metrics from multiple types of communications activity. 
  • Firm understanding of writing and editing standards.
