Description of Job

The communications specialist plays an essential role in executing the department's day-to-day communications tasks. This position will assist in creating and updating content for the Department website, writing and managing posts on social media, tracking data and preparing reports, and assisting with formatting external communications products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Communications Director by collaborating on key communications and marketing projects.
  • Work with program managers and subject matter experts to research and write content for the website.
  • Partner with program managers in planning, coordinating, and executing social media campaigns
  • Assist with market research and identify trends and new opportunities in digital communications. 
  • Manage internal and external relationships to ensure high quality and timely execution of the deliverables.
  • Work with vendors to prioritize and address website accessibility needs
  • Assist internal staff with designing presentations, reports, fact sheets, and other external communication materials
  • Assist with open records (CORA) requests and media inquiries
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources team to draft monthly internal newsletter
  • Contribute to analytics reporting on overall performances of campaigns
  • Help drive new internal communications standards and processes
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience Only: 
 Five (5) years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, journalism, or related experience.  
OR 
Education and Experience: 
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in marketing, communications, journalism, or related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years

 Preferred Qualifications:     

  • Relevant State of Colorado government experience 
  • Experience with developing and maintaining strong relationships with excellent customer service
  • Firm grasp on various marketing platforms, channels, and best practices, including social, digital, and email marketing.
  • Video editing skills
  • Must have strong analytical skills to analyze metrics and create reports
  • Must be able to embrace technology such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Adobe Suite, InDesign, Canva, Emma

Comparative Analysis:

Colorado Revised Statutes require that state employees are hired and promoted through a comparative analysis. After you meet the minimum qualifications for the position and depending on the number of qualified candidates, the comparative analysis for this position may include all or part of the structured review of your application materials against the minimum and preferred qualifications of the position and the review of the writing sample. 

The top six ranking candidates will then be invited for an interview.
