About the Position: 
The Communications Specialist helps deliver clear, consistent, and professional messaging across multiple platforms, including digital, print, and social media. This role supports communication efforts for both internal and external audiences by sharing information about City initiatives and programs, assisting with outreach for projects and events, and providing content that fosters trust, transparency, and engagement. The position will support the Human Resources Department by developing internal and external communications that enhance recruitment efforts, employee engagement, promote organizational culture, and ensure staff are well-informed about City programs, benefits, and initiatives.  This position provides an opportunity to apply strong communication skills in support of meaningful work that directly impacts residents, businesses, community partners, and City staff. 

About the Communications and Engagement Office: 
The City of Grand Junction’s Communications and Engagement Office provides strategic communications support to City Council, the City Manager’s Office, and department leadership across the organization. The team informs, educates, and engages both internal and external stakeholders through clear and consistent messaging. The office manages a wide range of channels—including the City’s website, engagement platforms, and social media—to ensure residents and employees have timely, accurate information about City programs, services, and initiatives. Beyond keeping the community informed, Communications and Engagement prioritizes public involvement, fostering opportunities for meaningful dialogue and participation in City processes. 

What You'll Do:

  • Support the City’s strategic communications efforts by delivering consistent, timely, and audience-focused messaging that advances transparency and accountability. 
  • Strengthen internal communications by developing content and tools that keep employees informed, connected, and aligned with organizational priorities.  
  • Lead external communication and outreach efforts to support recruitment by developing targeted campaigns, managing job-related content on digital platforms, and coordinating advertising strategies that attract diverse and qualified candidates.
  • Develop and facilitate two-way communication strategies with staff, partners, and external stakeholders to ensure information flows effectively across the organization and into the community. 
  • Apply graphic design, photography, and video skills to create branded content that enhances the City’s visual identity and highlights City programs, projects, and events. 
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to promote employment opportunities, develop recruitment materials, and craft messaging that highlights the City’s workplace culture, benefits, and career growth. 
  • Plan and support employee engagement initiatives such as appreciation events, wellness activities, and training sessions by coordinating logistics, developing promotional materials, and managing communication platforms.
  • Draft, edit, and proofread a variety of communication materials, including newsletters, flyers, brochures, social posts, presentations, and reports, that are accurate, accessible, and audience friendly. 
  • Develop and maintain content on the City’s websites and digital platforms to ensure information is current, engaging, and accessible meeting the WCAG standards. 
  • Measure and improve communication effectiveness by tracking analytics, conducting content and quality checks, and aligning all messaging with the City’s Strategic Plan. 
  • Perform other duties of similar nature or level.

What We're Looking For:

  • At least three (3) years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field. 
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business or public administration, journalism, or related field from an accredited college or university. 
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license. 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
