Purpose of Position: Responsible for the direction of the League’s Malone Center animal shelter operations. Lead and collaborate on strategic goals while working with the leadership team to creatively meet all shelter operations needs. Ensure every animal sheltered, and patron served, by the League receives optimal care.

Areas of Responsibility


  • Lead and direct the Malone Center operations team to ensure the highest level of people care is delivered to the League’s staff, volunteers, patrons, donors, partners, and vendors.
  • Direct and monitor all aspects of the League’s Malone Center shelter operations including pet admissions, animal care and adoptions. Collaborate fully with other departments to maximize the effectiveness of every team.
  • With the chief veterinarian, develop and implement shelter programs that control and reduce the prevalence and impact of contagion.
  • Lead coordination and integration of efforts among sheltering teams at Malone Center, with other teams at Malone Center and among all shelter locations to produce smoother workflow and more effective processes.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations at Malone Center, ensuring that core operational functions are achieved at the highest standard and exceptional performance is delivered consistently.
  • Implement and support the euthanasia content and training program designed by the Chief Veterinarian.
  • Perform euthanasia and related tasks as needed.
  • Support and direct the humane treatment in handling of companion animals to ensure the highest level of animal care is delivered to every animal in the League's care. This includes the adherence to and monitoring of mandated standards (e.g., PACFA) and ensuring a safe and sanitary environment for animals and people.
  • With managers, develop, evaluate, and control departmental budgets.
  • Demonstrate, and set expectations for, intentional, authentic, and effective collaboration across departments and locations and with external partners.
  • Support and direct the appropriate flow of companion animals through shelter departments. Work in conjunction with other departments to assure appropriate, timely outcomes for all animals.
  • Manage and develop effective staff: provide effective communication, leadership, guidance, and resources. Determine staff qualifications and competency: recruit, interview, select, hire, train, orient, mentor, evaluate, coach, counsel, discipline, and reward. Establish and monitor staff safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness across the department, including statistical analysis and report creation and presentation. Implement improvements, ensuring efficient use of resources and effective operations.
  • Ensure program grant compliance, and quality of services and evaluations.
  • Work in collaboration with the Development and Communications teams to support fundraising efforts and campaigns, such as providing impact stories and reports resulting in financial support.
  • Create opportunities for all staff to meet their goals for growth. Develop leadership capacity and provide effective continuing education opportunities for department.
  • Direct and oversee staff to ensure that they are motivated, trained and empowered to carry out their responsibilities to the required standard of excellence.
  • Play a key role in development and evaluation of League wide strategic initiatives and goals.
  • Remain informed and up to date with relevant industry trends and practices to keep the League at the leading edge of animal welfare, building toward the future.
  • Serve as a liaison and promote the League’s mission and objectives to the community and other animal welfare organizations.
  • Maintain highly effective relationships with all other directors to ensure successful allocation of resources and coordination of activities in support of strategic objectives. Communicate regularly with other directors, VPs, and the CEO when necessary.
  • Participate in donor events, meetings, and tours.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, coaching, and training to operational managers and support other leadership development practices to ensure productive, collaborative day-to-day shelter operations.
  • Highlight and remove obstacles to progress and identify and acquire needed resources and tools for success.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

Performs work primarily in an office setting. Potentially prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion. May work in an area with high noise level. Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces. Occasional lifting with reasonable accommodation.

  • Five or more years of management experience is required
  • Management experience in an animal shelter or similar organization is required
  • Knowledge of veterinary care/animal health is preferred
  • Experience managing vendors and contracts is preferred



Compensation: $90,000 to $100,000 annually (starting pay commensurate with market, experience, and equity)
