In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DEDO has been integral to the economic relief efforts to small businesses and nonprofits throughout the city and will continue to be a driving force behind an equitable recovery.

 

We are looking for a Director of Communications and Marketing to lead our marketing, public relations, public information, communication, City Council efforts around economic recovery, business development, workforce development, neighborhood stabilization, and support for small, women and minority-owned businesses. 

As the Director of Communications and Marketing, you would have an opportunity to make substantial impact in our community. The Director will manage a team of 2-3 professionals working to help tell the story of our agency to the individuals, businesses, neighborhoods and populations that we serve, and will work across city agencies on high-profile projects that will impact the city for decades to come.

Specifically, as the Director of Communications and Marketing, you will:

  • Develop, oversee, evaluate, execute and lead a comprehensive strategic marketing and communications plan for DEDO, including internal and external communications, that align with DEDO’'s overall strategic plan to build an inclusive economy.
  • Developing compelling presentations and preparing speeches/remarks for senior level executives
  • Oversee written content for the DEDO's website, social media platforms, department newsletter, public information materials, reports and executive communications.
  • Oversee strategy, vision, creation/production for all internal and/or external marketing and communications materials, with an eye for high-end design.
  • Oversee the media relations strategy for DEDO, ensuring that good working relationships are established and maintained with media representatives. You will also act as DEDO's principal spokesperson and oversee and coordinate the production and distribution of public information and announcements.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Mayor Office, multiple nonprofit community partners, and/or private industry supporters for all marketing, communication and/or public relations matters relating to DEDO.
  • Prepare and oversee consistent presentation materials.
  • Develop digital strategy and oversee implementation.
  • Develop and update DEDO policy for public information responses, manage responses to critical or sensitive public information, open records requests from the public, media, elected/appointed officials, and/or others, and ensure legal compliance in areas affecting public access to information.
  • Oversee all DEDO crisis communications by serving as a spokesperson and/or providing executive counsel, and interacting with city, local, state, or federal officials and manage legal implications of response.
  • Oversee internal communications including support for employee engagement efforts.
  • Oversee event planning activity for DEDO or citywide functions including marketing and promotion of these events. Provide leadership and direction for community/neighborhood and other public meetings.
  • Ensure financial resources are utilized appropriately and shift resources based on business needs within budget restraints. Manages budget requests and expenditures.
  • Manage and organize the internal team and external consulting resources to meet the needs of clients. Determine staffing needs; selects, hires, acculturates, coaches, develops, and evaluates staff.
  • Develop goals, document performance, provide performance feedback and formally evaluate the work of the employee; provide reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Assist staff to achieve performance standards and identify opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Background in Communications, Marketing and/or Public Policy. 
  • Experience with multi-cultural marketing or working with diverse communities.
  • Both strategic communications/leadership skills and tactical abilities – a working manager. 
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically. 
  • Ability to think quickly and respond to multiple issues at one time. 
  • Ability to prepare and review various publications, both print and electronic. 
  • Ability to use e-communications and social media platforms to enhance communications and deliver messages to target audiences. 
  • Knowledge of publishing techniques, including the editorial, graphic design, style, and production aspects of publishing. 
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative market research methods. 
  • Knowledge of trends/changes in the field including growing use of electronic/social media platforms. 
  • Knowledge/experience in the fields represented by our office. 
  • Confident public speaker.

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or a related field.
  • Experience Requirement: Five (5) years of experience managing in the communications field (journalism, graphic design, marketing, development communications and/or public relations).  Three years of experience at the type and level of functional and/or operational management.
  • Education & Experience Equivalency: Two (2) years of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.  (For example, if a Baccalaureate Degree is required, eight years of relevant experience can be substituted.) A relevant Master's Degree may substitute for up to one year of the experience requirement.
  • Licensure & Certification: A valid driver's license at time of application and a valid Colorado class "R" driver's license prior to completion of probation period.
