Here is How the Coservation Director Makes a Difference

In fulfillment of WW’s mission, the Conservation Directordevelops, leads and implements WW’s conservation program in partnership with the Executive Director and other program staff. The Conservation Director develops and implments WW’s forest, restoration, aquatic, responsible recreation, and wilderness programs. These programs evolve over time or change depending on the current set of threats to our public lands, and the Conservation Director plays a lead role in identifying new opportunities for program impact. 


The Conservation Director collaborates with other staff to choose the specific conservation goals and projects undertaken by WW. The Conservation Director is also responsible for ensuring policy consistency in WW’s Community Programs including our Hike series, Restoration Program, Naturalists Nights and Wilderness Monitoring programs.  Lastly, the Conservation Director develops strong relationships with County Commissioners, colleagues at partner organizations, grassroots activists, and staff at the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Congressional offices.

The Roaring Fork Valley stretches from the top of Independence Pass, through Aspen and Carbondale to the confluence with the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs.  The breadth and depth of recreational and cultural amenities found in this community are second to none.  Multiple wilderness areas, ski areas, world class biking and running trails, and nationally recognized art and cultural institutions are all found in the Valley.


This is What it Takes to Do the Job 

Qualified candidates will have a deep passion for and connection with public lands and wilderness.  Additionally, candidates will have experience and/or skills in these areas:



  • Management-level experience in leading internal functions or large projects for independent organizations or government agencies.
  • In-depth knowledge of western public lands history/policy, ecosystem protection, resource management, or conservation biology.
  • Ability to professionally represent the organization in front of members of Congress, agency staff, other decision makers, the press, and the public.
  • Proven ability to manage staff and volunteers to achieve measurable results.


Advocacy & Program Management

  • Minimum three to five years of relevant work experience in policy, advocacy or environmental fields. 
  • Experience in designing and managing programs, preferably conservation advocacy or policy projects in the field.
  • Experience with grassroots, non-profit environmental advocacy.
  • Experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); some experience in analyzing EAs and EISs, drafting comments, and filing administrative appeals preferred.
  • Excellent writing, public speaking & presentation skills.
  • Experience in a political office or in running political or advocacy campaigns highly valued though not required. 



  • Ability to read a map and safely navigate challenging backcountry conditions.
  • GIS mapping experience would be useful.
  • Computer literacy required; social media proficiency preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to quickly interpret and strategically respond to others emotions, opinions and statements.
  • Sense of humor.
  • Collaborative by nature.
  • Nimble and open to seizing new opportunities.



  • Undergraduate degree in applicable field required; graduate degree preferred.
  • Willingness to live and be an active member of the Roaring Fork Valley.


What are the Rewards

The salary range for the Conservation Director position reflects the senior level of the position and the market conditions of the surrounding area. The benefits package includes a sabbatical policy, health insurance, wellness days, sick days, and a simple IRA contribution. Relocation support is also available for qualified candidates who are ready to move to our mountain community.
