The Director of Marketing serves as a staff member at will of the Denver Zoo. In that capacity, the Director of Marketing advances Denver Zoo’s mission and goals by assisting the organization in reaching its revenue goals through marketing, promotions and advertising. As the Denver Zoo brand expression steward, the Marketing Director collaborates with communications and creative partners to align all work within the brand while ensuring all intra-zoo asset requests are developed properly on time and budget. This individual has had marketing budget responsibilities, driven towards organizational-wide goals, managed agency or in-house marketing teams and is a confident and influential collaborator and communicator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees asset production and works with Creative Director to ensure work is on strategy, on time and on budget.
  • Manages relationships, evaluates and measures performance of media plans and executions, and supports day-to-day advertising opportunities. 
  • Designs, implement and facilitate an annual marketing plan for Denver Zoo to achieve revenue goals for brand, gate attendance, programs, and events for key audiences.
  • Oversee the website functionality and updates
  • Evaluates new partnerships to optimize marketing efforts.
  • Track effectiveness of marketing mix through a variety of metrics, preparing and providing monthly reports for effort/spend vs. goal. Makes appropriate adjustment recommendations to optimize results.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with the Communication and Creative Director in developing and executing against a PESO plan as well as other initiatives as needed.
  • Is a collaborative, upbeat and creative marketing partner for internal “clients” who need a variety of marketing strategy consulting and asset development throughout the year. Is an excellent communicator and presenter of ideas.
  • Oversees the Marketing Manager who is responsible for project management and communication and to whom a Marketing Coordinator reports. The Marketing Coordinator is primarily responsible for ad trafficking, email marketing execution, project management and invoice payments.
  • Responsible for annual marketing budget development, management and reconciliation. Acts as a good steward of Denver Zoo’s resources.
  • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of Denver Zoo.
  • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.  

Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in in Marketing, Public Relations or Mass Communications or related fields, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience. 
  • Requires minimum of 6-years’ experience in developing PESO marketing plans, executing those plans against a large budget while leading a marketing team; experience with brand development and process management is strongly preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills. 
  • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite is necessary.  Utilization of email marketing software, such as Click Dimension, is preferred. Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Requires exemplary collaboration, organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks.
  • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must have superior negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy. Must be a recognized communicator and considered to be a developer, coach, and mentor who is comfortable working with a broad cross section of people in direct and matrixed relationships. Experience developing and executing strategic goals preferred. Must have proficient skills in managing large and complex teams and/or programs.
  • Diplomacy at confronting personal, individual, and internal discrimination requiring sharing and discussing personal identities relative to the work environment strongly preferred.
  • On rare occasions, may be required to work evenings and/or a weekend day.

Compensation

Range for this position is $7,315 – $9,143 (monthly).
