About the work unit:
The Office of Environmental Justice is newly established in statute to facilitate legislative and executive branch goals around Environmental Justice. The work unit implements the Mobile Home Park Water Quality Act and the Environmental Justice grant program, coordinates environmental justice efforts across state agencies, implements the Enviroscreen spatial mapping tool, facilitates environmental equity and cumulative impact analyses (EECIA), manages the Environmental Justice Advisory Board, promotes Supplemental Environmental Projects in disproportionately impacted communities, builds meaningful relationships with stakeholders and communities, and coordinates with the Department’s Tribal Liaison in working with Colorado’s two sovereign nations and other native communities. 

What you will be doing:
The EJ Office director oversees the Office in compliance with all relevant legislation and in close coordination with the Department’s executive director. The Director of the Office of Environmental Justice is a statutorily appointed position to provide comprehensive oversight of and direction to the newly established and dedicated Office of Environmental Justice (HB24-1338). The EJ Office director oversees the Office in compliance with all relevant legislation. The director assures the successful implementation of the budget, work plans, grants and contract management, advisory committees. The position ensures the program builds relationships with disproportionately impacted communities and manages external affairs. The position works closely with the department’s senior executive team in a high profile environment and assures the office is aligned with the executive director and the governor’s office. The position contributes to the department’s strategic plan, legislative agenda, and budget process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Combination of Education and Related Experience: A degree in public health, environmental health, environmental law, public policy, public administration, or related field, combined with at least 5 years of experience working at a senior level in the public health, public policy or environmental protection fields; demonstrated leadership experience working directly for a principal, board or elected official; management of a program, work unit or organization and direct staff supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, environmental health, public policy, public administration, or related field or law degree

  • Experience in a position of leadership

  • Experience working with underserved communities in a culturally meaningful way

  • Experience working with a broad set of stakeholders 

  • Politically savvy; experience working with the media and successfully managing external affairs

  • Strong business acumen, experience producing outcomes, strategic planning, and budgetary agendas

  • Supervisory experience to include group facilitation and performance management
