Someone who can write compelling opinion pieces, edit a diverse array of content, report the facts, conduct layout and shoot photos.per in the Colorado Rockies, is looking for an editor-in-chief to join our small but dedicated team. Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the United States, is known for its outdoor recreation, mining heritage, Victorian charm and ultra-endurance races.

The editor is also responsible for managing the newspaper's four-person staff and putting together various special editions throughout the year. We have a great appreciation for editors who are highly organized, hold an eye for detail and an unflinching dedication to the First Amendment.

You won’t get rich, the hours are long and the weather is often below freezing. Yet there is something about this mountain town, and the people who live here, that has inspired the Herald Democrat remain in business for 142 years. The newspaper is owned by Arkansas Valley Publishing Company of Saldia and has remained financially solvent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The office is closed on Wednesdays, opening up midweek powder days, river adventures or trips to Denver. Leadville isn’t for everyone, but if it’s for you, you might just never leave.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing day-to-day operations or the newspaper.

  • Curating the weekly newspaper's content by assigning articles, vetting letters and cartoons, and editing press releases, guest columns, obituaries and more.

  • Writing a weekly editorial.

  • Conducting newspaper layout with Adobe InDesign.

  • Generating news articles and photographs to support the Herald's reporter using the principles of fair, accurate, objective, timely and complete coverage.

  • Overseeing the production of several special editions per year such as history and adventure guides.

  • Managing, mentoring and working collaboratively with the four-person staff.

  • Engaging with the community in a professional manner at interviews, meetings and community events.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, political science or another relevant discipline.

  • Prior reporting and editing experience.

  • Familiarity with Associated Press style guidelines.

  • Digital photography know-how.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an aptitude for leadership. Prior managerial experience is a plus.

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign is a plus. Will train the right candidate.

  • Must be willing to live in Leadville/Lake County. No commuters.
