Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a talented individual to join our Customer and Workforce Communications team. The Public Affairs Specialist will be part of a highly visible and effective team that manages both external and internal communication for Colorado Springs Utilities. Collaborating with our electric, natural gas, water and wastewater services groups, you will use your public relations and communication skills to help enable business operations and meet the information needs of our customers.
As a Public Affairs Specialist, you will be responsible for:
- Planning and implementing communication plans to build understanding and influence behavior
- Creating and editing print and digital content for internal and external audiences
- Developing creative stories for various communications channels to inform our workforce and customers about our services and programs
- Responding to information requests from the media, customers and other stakeholders
- Assisting in the production of paid media as part of an integrated communication strategy
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with customers, employees, media and public interest groups
- Supporting customer and community programs such as the Change the Current initiative to help our customers use their utility services safely and efficiently
- Participating in a 24/7 on-call emergency response team on a rotating basis and assisting in crisis communications
- Assisting with graphic design, photography and audio/visual production using the Adobe Creative Suite

What will it take to be successful in this position? The ideal candidate will offer a minimum of three years of experience working in public relations or marketing communications, demonstrating a rich portfolio of work across different services and audiences, preferably in the utility industry. We are looking for a team player, with a great attitude, strong work ethic and excellent communication skills. A bachelor’s degree in public relations, mass communications, marketing, journalism or a related discipline is preferred. A blended background working in both traditional and digital media will ensure you are successful in this role.
We are particularly interested in your experience in the following areas, so be sure to highlight them on your resume and application.
- Adobe Creative Suite (must be proficient in InDesign, Flash, Illustrator & Photoshop).
- Marketing communications experience
- Client relations experience
- Ability to take initiative, collaborate and effectively balance stakeholder relationships
- Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)
- Knowledge of SharePoint and Oracle Content and Experience Cloud are preferred
