EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Executive Director:
As the protector and driver of Union Hall’s mission, the primary responsibility of the Executive Director is the management of Union Hall in conjunction with the Board of Directors. The Executive Director leads long- and short-range strategic and operational planning, fundraising and development, and oversees programs and strategic partnerships. The Executive Director is Union Hall’s leader on all artistic, education and organizational activities representing Union Hall as chief spokesperson to its internal and external constituencies. The Executive Director participates in events which increase awareness and expands community outreach, locally and in the State of Colorado.
CORE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties comprise roughly a third of the Executive Director responsibilities.
Strategic and Organizational Leadership:
- In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop, implement, and manage the organization’s strategic plan that prioritizes scaled growth, community impact, and profile elevation.
- Oversee and manage all operational activities, including education, public programming, partnerships, finance, external communications, and staff supervision.
- Supervise, train, and motivate a team of paid staff, independent contractors, and volunteers, providing guidance, resources, and professional development to enhance and support the organization’s culture.
Fundraising:
- Lead all fundraising and development activities, including grant writing, as well as cultivating and stewarding relationships with foundations, government, corporations, individual donors, and fundraising events.
- In partnership with the Board and the Development Committee, develop and manage a comprehensive, $350,000+ fundraising plan that diversifies sustainable revenue, expands capacity, and increases community impact.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager with all funders and community partners to enhance the organization’s public image and expand support.
Artistic Leadership & Program Development:
- Work closely with staff to create a cohesive exhibition plan and continue to develop the Rough Gems Curatorial program, along with other programs and events.
- Position Union Hall as a thought leader in arts & culture in Denver and the State of Colorado assuring that Union Hall has maximum visibility and artistic standing with an impact that reaches deeply into the local community.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fiscal Management & Legal Compliance:
- With Board oversight, manage all fiscal and compliance activities for the organization.
- Together with the Board, establish and manage monitoring systems and policies to ensure funds and resources are properly managed and timely submission of accurate mandated reports.
- Actively monitor the fiscal health of the organization, as well as financial feasibility of programming and activities and provide timely reports to the Board.
- Develop and present the organization’s annual budget for approval by the Board.
- Oversee payroll and benefits processes, ensuring that records and transactions are accurate and compliant with local, state, and federal law.
- Ensure all insurance policies are kept up to date and are reviewed annually for proper coverage and cost-effective premiums.
- In partnership with the Board, ensure all legal contracts and partnership agreements protect the organization and are compliant with local, state and federal law.
Board Relations:
- Support the governing, operational and fundraising work of the organization’s Board and committees.
- Together with the Board’s Executive Committee, provide guidance on Board development through new board member onboarding, board training and performance self-evaluation.
- The Executive Director is an ex officio, non-voting member of Union Hall’s Board of Directors.
Public Relations, Marketing and Communications:
- Represent Union Hall with the community as the primary ambassador of the organization.
- Identify key stakeholders (individuals, agencies, organizations, and institutions) to increase local, statewide, and national awareness and prominence and develop strategies for engagement.
- Together with the staff, develop and oversee the organization’s public relations and marketing to plan to maximize the visibility and brand image of Union Hall.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with external constituents including major institutions in the Denver-metro area and develop opportunities for mission-aligned strategic partnerships and collaborations.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- At least two years at a senior managerial level is required, making this an excellent opportunity for an emerging leader ready for the executive director level.
- Five+ years working in the nonprofit field is required.
- Proven success in fundraising, donor development, and grant writing is required.
- Demonstrated success with local and state funders is required and experience with national funders is a bonus.
- Proven experience developing, implementing, and managing a strategic plan is required.
- Evidenced success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget is required.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising and developing staff, as well as managing independent contractors are required.
- Excellent communication skills, including written communications and public speaking is required.
- This position requires a variable schedule, which includes weekends and evenings as needed.
- Demonstrated success as the primary organizational ambassador is preferred.
- Experience with board development and governance is preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of standards and best practices for gallery management, arts administration or similar field is preferred.
- Experience working with professional or emerging artists and curators is preferred but not required.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with boards, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies is preferred.
- Understanding of employment law and experience managing HR practices is preferred but not required.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS & APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
SALARY: Salary of $80,000 – $90,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications, experiences, and competencies.
BENEFITS:
- Union Hall offers medical and dental benefits on the 1st of the month after hire, contributing 75% for a selected plan for the employee. Employees pay the difference for more expensive plan and dependents. Vision is available separately through the providers.
- Union Hall has 10 regular holidays + 1 floating holiday
- Union Hall offers paid time, that is accrued on a monthly basis, beginning with 10 days for 0-1 year of service ++
PREFERRED GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: The Executive Director is required to attend multiple events and meetings in the Denver-metro area; therefore, it is preferred they reside in the Denver-metro area or the Front Range. Highly qualified candidates from outside the Front Range area will be considered if they are willing to relocate.
