Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Communications serves as a liaison between NEFE's action areas/departments and leads and executes communications projects and initiatives that support thought leadership and engagement activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, or ability required.

Project and Initiative Leadership:

  • Manage projects that advance NEFE’s mission and external presence
  • Work with the Managing Director, Media and Communications on activities that drive forward NEFE’s strategic goals and externally elevate its position in the field
  • Serve as communications liaison across the Marketing, Research, and Policy & Advocacy teams to collaborate on deliverables and external outputs

Corporate Communications:

  • Write, edit and consult on branded communications, including press releases, data summaries, newsletters, website copy, social media, video scripts, webinars, in-house communication, etc.
  • Edit and proofread work from others, paying strict attention to details, voice, and the application of AP Style and internal style
  • Maintain an understanding of the organization’s target audiences and appropriately tailor copy and content to them
  • Assist in marketing and communications planning and the execution of dissemination strategies
  • Develop engaging stories and messaging tied to driving the organization’s strategic goals
  • Collaboratively guide internal teams on communication projects, including determining requirements and scope, managing timelines and tasks, proactively raising issues that may impact quality or timing of deliverables, and offering solutions when challenges arise
  • Collaborate with and oversee third-party vendors (designers, content developers, digital marketers, etc.) hired for internal and external projects
  • Develop knowledge and fluency in the field of financial education and financial well-being systems

Field Engagement Activities:

  • Maintain organizational relationships with partners, advocates, policymakers, practitioners, SMEs, and advocates at key organizations
  • Represent NEFE at conferences, panels, meetings, webinars, keynotes and other relevant engagements, including:
    • Building relationships with conference organizers and thought leaders who present or attend
    • Speaking on relevant topics or NEFE’s initiatives
    • Distilling and disseminating relevant information back to NEFE

Research-to-Practice Activities:

  • Assist in the dissemination of messaging and facilitation of feedback loops from internal and external stakeholders
  • Analyze and interpret data from primary and secondary research, synthesize key points, and turn them into relevant, compelling stories, narratives, presentations and creative ideas
  • Support research and policy-related messaging projects, including opinion polls, grant dissemination, public policy briefs, etc.

Other Duties/Responsibilities

  • Define, monitor and evaluate success factors (KPIs) for projects and initiatives
  • Collaborate with Managing Director, Media and Communications on initiatives and special projects for various internal and external audiences
  • Support departmental progress toward strategic plan goals and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Participate in the promotion and facilitation of NEFE’s grant funding process
  • Collaborate with all staff on various projects and initiatives
  • Manage external vendors
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expert proficiency in AP Style and copyediting
  • Attention to detail (application of quality assurance reviews)
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Ability to deliver quality work with short turnaround timelines
  • Strong storytelling abilities across multiple audiences and channels
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders
  • Skills in outreach and relationship management
  • Comfortable collaborating with a team as well as working alone
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize key information for a variety of stakeholders within and external to NEFE
  • Excellent organizational skills/ability to manage multiple duties and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing projects from development to completion
  • Ability to communicate progress, risks, timelines, expectations and deliverables clearly and effectively on multiple ongoing projects, both internally and with vendors
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft collaboration tools; ability to rapidly adopt new software tools as needed
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, education, nonprofit management, business, or related fields; or equivalent experience 
  • Four to seven years of experience with copywriting and editing, preferably in corporate communications, journalism, nonprofit, foundation, government or private sectors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in personal finance and financial well-being

Physical/Mental Demands of the Job
Work hours are generally 8:30 AM -5:00 PM Monday – Friday – up to 50% remote work is offered under normal circumstances. Employees work directly with their supervisor and HR to determine the best work schedule, providing sufficient overlap with other NEFE employees.

Compensation/Benefits
The base salary for this position ranges from $80,150 – $90,000, with the final offer reflecting the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Please note that the salary for this position is fixed within this range and is not negotiable in order to ensure pay equity.

NEFE provides a comprehensive benefits package, including vacation, sick leave, holidays, six weeks of paid parental leave, and health, dental, vision, and life/AD&D/disability insurance.
