Elevation Community Land Trust (ECLT) is a growing, innovative nonprofit with a mission of providing permanently affordable homeownership opportunities to low- and moderate-income families across Colorado. As a key member of the ECLT Finance Team, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for three primary functions: accurately and timely recording of cash, revenue and receivables to support real time cash reporting; executing day to day accounting functions, including the weekly accounts payable process and recording routine monthly journal entries; and supporting ECLT’s strong internal control environment through expert management of systems and files. PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

The Staff Accountant will execute a wide variety of accounting transactions to support accurate and timely financial reporting across all levels of the organization. This position is critical to ECLT's system of internal controls and will collaborate closely with the rest of the ECLT Finance Team to enhance and elevate the team’s systems integrations and file management practices. This position reports to the Controller & Director of Accounting (CDA) and has no direct reports. Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

Revenue and Receivables:

  • Record all cash receipts, including check deposits and EFT receipts to support real time cash reporting.
  • Record receivable transactions for key revenue sources, including land lease fees and homeowner reimbursements.
  • Regularly update applicable revenue and receivable subledgers and trackers, including the land lease subledger and rent tracker.
  • Develop new subledgers as needed to enhance tracking and provide reliable information to key staff.
  • Communicate with appropriate staff about issues related to revenue and receivables as they arise.
  • Document cash, revenue and receivable processes and make recommendations for improvements.

Accounts Payable:

  • Review all bills inputted by ECLT’s contract bookkeeper for accuracy; work with the bookkeeper on corrections as needed; submit bills to the CDA for final approval.
  • Prepare weekly check runs, including printing check batches, presenting checks and electronic payment batches to an authorized signer and working with the Administrative Coordinator on mailings.
  • Manage the employee charge (credit) card process.
  • Act as the backup to the bookkeeper on key tasks, including inputting bills in the bookkeeper’s absence.
  • Document accounts payable processes and make recommendations for improvements.

General Accounting:

  • Prepare routine monthly journal entries, including but not limited to intercompany transfers, routine accrual and prepayment entries and monthly interest payments.
  • Develop a strong understanding of ECLT’s general ledger chart of accounts.
  • Support the annual audit process, including preparing periodic account reviews and reconciliations.
  • Support the preparation of the annual Form 990 informational return.
  • Assist in the completion of reports for internal staff and external partners.
  • In the absence of the Administrative Coordinator, act as the backup on mail, check logging and other finance support tasks.

Technology & Systems:

  • Develop expert knowledge of Sage Intacct, ECLT’s accounting system, including monitoring product releases and making recommendations for improvements and enhancements.
  • Digitize accounting processes in keeping with best practices to enable ECLT’s organizational goals, including leading the development of an employee self service portal in Sage.
  • Lead Sharepoint implementation and ongoing maintenance for the Finance Team.
  • Lead file management for the Finance Team, including annual review of files in accordance with ECLT’s document retention policy.

General:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the community land trust model.
  • Document internal procedures to improve and streamline ECLT financial processes.
  • Assist in the development of the annual budget.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as an inter- and intra-departmental team member, working cross functionally to meet organizational goals.
  • Support compliance efforts with a focus on federal funding and financial covenant monitoring.
  • Maintain an understanding of community issues that impact ECLT’s work.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required

Experience:

  • At least three years of experience in accounting for a nonprofit organization
  • Experience with affordable housing programs a plus
  • Experience with or an understanding of federal grants a plus

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Intermediate proficiency with Sage Intacct or similar software.
  • Intermediate proficiency with the following software platforms (or equivalent/similar platforms): Sharepoint, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce
  • Some proficiency with Microsoft Planner a plus
  • High level of technological acumen, and adept at learning and implementing new technologies
  • Extremely detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize effectively pursuant to organizational goals
  • Eagerness to learn and a growth mindset, with excellent collaboration and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Requirements:

  • Must pass a background check
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and demonstrate a good work ethic
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up 100% of scheduled work hours
  • Must occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Salary range: $60,100 to $69,000, commensurate with depth of experience and overall qualifications. ECLT also offers a generous benefit package that includes health/dental/vision coverage, life, 401k, and paid time off. This position is currently eligible for additional support and resources if the incumbent is studying for the Certified Public Accountant exam.

ECLT is based in Denver and offers a flexible, hybrid work environment. The ECLT office is closed on Fridays and all team members have the option to work a four-day week, or a five-day week with a dedicated meeting-free day on Friday.
