Job Summary
Under the supervision of the CEO, the Deputy Director of Finance & Operations (DDFO) will be responsible for providing leadership in all financial and operations matters of Urban Peak. The position will partner with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement operational strategies and strategic initiatives across the organization. At the direction of the CEO, will work with the Board Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. The DDFO will oversee financial and operational compliance and reporting for government (federal, state and local) contracts and private grants. The DDFO will work with all departments of the agency to help managers effectively develop and manage program budgets. The DDFO must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace with both attention to detail and a global picture of the organization.
Who You Are:
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Finance or Operations Director, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer or other top-level position including financial oversight, organizational management, staff supervision, strategic thinking, budgeting, audits and problem solving.
- MBA in accounting, finance or related field is required.
- Experience working with Boards of Directors.
- Experience with not-for-profit billings and fund accounting, payroll, governmental reporting, and audits.
- Must have spreadsheet and accounting software experience.
- Must be proficient in project management and delegation of tasks tied to project plans.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks effectively under pressure with attention to detail and the ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to balance program and financial needs of the organization.
- Must be computer proficient and possess experience with Office 365, Teams and financial accounting software; knowledge of Blackbaud Financial Edge is preferred.
- Lived experience reflective of the youth we serve is preferred but not required.
- Committed to trauma informed care and positive youth development.
- Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak’s auto liability policy in order to conduct business on behalf of the agency or transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle and an approved personal vehicle.
- Ability to use second language in written and verbal communication desired (Spanish, Vietnamese, ASL)
- Ability to pass both federal and state background checks and a pre-employment TB screening.
What You Will Do:
Finance
- Leads a team of accounting and administrative managers.
- Oversees the financial health of Urban Peak including budget preparation, monitoring and variance tracking, cash flow and financial investments, ratios, financial planning and forecasting, and capital asset management.
- Ensures integrity, accuracy, and transparency of organizational financial transactions.
- Coordinates with Senior Leadership team and CEO to develop annual revenue, expense and capital budgets including supporting schedules, covering salary schedules, program allocations, and grant management.
- Ensures maintenance and improvement of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures and adherence to financial policies and requirements; evaluates and improves business processes for accuracy and efficiency; maintains finance policy and procedures manual.
- Oversees all accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, payroll, month-end close and reconciliations, preparation of monthly financial statements and financial reports.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP accounting procedures.
- Represents Urban Peak to financial partners.
- Identifies financial risks/opportunities; provides analysis and recommendations to the CEO, Finance Committee and Boards of Directors.
- Serves as staff liaison for the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors under the direction of the CEO.
- Ensures recording of all transactions in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, applicable OMB Circulars, CFR’s, grant requirements and best practice; document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
- Manages the annual independent audit process and ensures accurate and timely filing of IRS Form 990s and OMB Circular A-133 audit report.
- Ensures financial and administrative compliance with grants restrictions, guidelines and government regulations including monitoring.
- Manages development of budgets for grant proposals.
- Oversees grant billings to maximize resources.
- Operations
- Ensures compliance with government and private funders, organization policies, and local, state and federal laws and regulations in all business operations.
- Provides leadership to internal and external team for IT network and infrastructure, and onsite operations support.
- Assigns priorities, delegates authority, and provides guidance on operational issues.
- Represents Urban Peak to agency partners and government entities on all operational matters.
- Serves as staff liaison to ad hoc Committees of the Board of Directors at the direction of the CEO.
- Analyzes the organization’s technology infrastructure and financial systems to ensure all systems support the strategic initiatives and growth.
- Ensures that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including Charitable Status, Withholding Payments, Income Tax, Property Tax, insurance and other agency business.
- Manages the acquisition of capital assets and ensures that assets are properly recorded, depreciated, and disposed of as appropriate.
- Oversees all other compliance requirements of the agency.
- Oversees use of agency’s assets.
- Oversees staff in maintenance of complete and compliant lease documentation and property documentation.
- Prioritizes capital needs assessment and budgets accordingly.
- Oversees housing grant reporting and compliance requirements.
- Oversight, Planning and Leadership
- Assists the CEO with strategic financial and operational development.
- Serves on the Senior Leadership Team as an active and contributing member supporting the organization’s mission, vision, values, strategic goals and objectives; formulating policies; guiding and leading the change process; and evaluating organizational effectiveness as an organizational leader.
- Actively participates in the collective bargaining process with the union and provides finance- and operational-related input as needed.
- Leads Urban Peak as directed in the absence of CEO.
- Supervision
- Effectively supervises and manages direct reports and provides, by example and leadership, motivation and direction to employees of the organization.
- Performs supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable state and federal employment laws.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; recognizing and rewarding employees; corrective disciplinary procedures and practices (under direction of the CEO), addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Evaluates performance of employees in compliance with established policies and objectives of the organization and contributions in attaining objectives.
- Helps set the tone of the department to ensure morale, teamwork, and the positive employment culture of the organization is maintained.

Who We Are:
Founded in 1988, Urban Peak is the only non-profit organization in Denver that provides a full convergence of services for youth ages 15 through 24 experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Our goal is to meet youth where they are and to provide them with the assistance and support, they need to become self-sufficient or obtain the necessary services they need to exit a life on the streets.
Urban Peak provides numerous programs and services that are founded on the principles of trauma-informed care and Positive Youth Development to assist youth in reaching their potential and living a successful life off the streets. Services include street outreach, a 40-bed shelter for youth ages 15 through 20, a daytime drop-in center, supportive housing, education and employment services, case management, life skills courses, behavioral health evaluations, meals and more.
