Northern Colorado Kids Thrive (NoCo Kids Thrive), formerly Early Childhood Council of Larimer County, is an independent nonprofit organization and steward of significant public investment dedicated to ensuring every young child in our community has quality early childhood experiences so they thrive from day one.
Through voter-approved early care and education tax funding and additional public and private investments, NoCo Kids Thrive oversees more than $20 million annually in public revenue, in addition to workforce supports, family tuition subsidies, and philanthropic funding. As administrator of these funds, the organization is entrusted with fiscal integrity, transparency, and long-term sustainability in service to children, families, educators, and taxpayers.
Position Summary:
At NoCo Kids Thrive, we are a close-knit team of professionals who value passion, innovation, adaptability and a sense of humor. The Finance Director plays a critical leadership role in managing the organization’s accounting operations and financial systems as we grow into our role as administrator of early care and education tax funding.
Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, the Finance Director oversees day-to-day financial management, fund accounting, compliance tracking, and reporting across multiple complex funding streams. This includes voter-approved tax revenue, government contracts, grants, tuition subsidies, workforce investments, and other restricted and unrestricted funds.
This position ensures financial accuracy, audit readiness, strong internal controls, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a CPA or highly experienced accounting professional who thrives in complex environments, brings deep technical expertise, and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of fiscal integrity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Operations & Accounting Leadership
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, general ledger management, and monthly reconciliation processes.
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal leadership and Board review.
- Lead bank reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial documentation processes.
- Ensure appropriate allocation of shared expenses across multiple funding streams in alignment with internal cost allocation policies.
- Oversee financial data integrity across systems, ensuring alignment between accounting software and operational platforms.
- Serve as a resource to program and operations teams regarding financial procedures, documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Strengthen financial systems and workflows to support organizational growth and increasing funding complexity.
- Ensure accounting software and financial tracking systems are optimized for multi-fund management.
Tax Revenue & Complex Fund Administration
- Under the supervision of the CFOO, manage detailed financial tracking of voter-approved early care and education tax revenue exceeding $20M annually.
- In coordination with Program Directors, support financial administration of pass-through funding, including tuition subsidies and workforce investments, ensuring accurate disbursement, reconciliation, and documentation.
- Track revenue allocations and ensure expenditures align with designated funding categories and requirements.
- Maintain detailed reporting systems to support transparency and public accountability.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Implement and monitor strong internal controls to safeguard public and private funds.
- Ensure compliance with grant requirements, government contracts, and regulatory standards.
- Prepare documentation, schedules, and financial reports necessary for annual audits and tax filings.
- Identify areas for financial process improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain clear financial procedures and documentation standards across the organization.
Budgeting & Reporting Support
- Conduct budget-to-actual variance analysis and provide insights to support operational decision-making.
- Support grant budget preparation and financial reporting requirements, and provide financial data and analysis to internal teams as needed.
