The Office of the Governor's staff includes budgeting, communications and outreach, legal counsel, legislative liaison, operations, policy and research, and scheduling.

Position Title: Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs 

Department: Legislative Affairs

Hiring Range: $100,000 – $115,000

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Organizational Relationships: This position reports to the Legislative Director.

Expected Annual Travel: Occasional in-state travel

Summary of Functions: The Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs assists the Legislative Director and represents the Governor and administration before the General Assembly in support of the Governor’s legislative agenda. The position oversees the Governor’s policy and legislative agenda, including priority initiatives, and provides general support to the Legislative Team in advancing the Governor’s legislative agenda. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development of the Governor’s annual legislative agenda, including execution and enactment of bills related to policy areas.

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Governor’s priorities. 

  • Advocate for and communicate the Administration’s goals and legislative priorities to the General Assembly.

  • Draft legislative language, amendments, signing statements, and veto statements. 

  • Advise on legislative strategy, process, and positions.

  • In consultation with the Legislative Director, vet/screen/approve/deny department positions on pending legislation.

  • Track all legislation introduced during the legislative session through Salesforce platform, and develop recommendations for action or amending.

  • Provide project management, support (and defense when needed) for 18 department legislative liaisons.

  • Assist agency liaisons with executive agency legislative priorities.

Education/Experience: 

6+ years’ work related experience in a legislative or policy related role within a government agency.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent relevant experience.
