Description
The Vail Daily seeks a versatile part-time copy editor/page designer to join the newsroom team. The position requires traditional copy-editing skills needed to prepare content for our website, digital editions and print products. Copy editors should be able to design pages, edit copy, write compelling headlines, work with editors and reporters and have a strong command of AP style. The right candidate will have an interest in community journalism and the ability to edit stories for clarity, accuracy, style and grammar on deadline. In addition, copy editors must maintain a positive attitude and a calm demeanor under deadline pressure. This position typically works Fridays through Sundays with a nightly deadline at 9 p.m. MST.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Edit stories for accuracy, clarity, completeness, objectivity, grammar, spelling, organization, readability and style
- Eliminate errors in stories and identify errors in the design process
- Write clear and informative headlines, and adjust web headlines to translate better for print
- Coordinate with reporters, editors and photographers to ensure consistency in style, tone and quality
- Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating with other employees and organizations
- Recognize that the industry is rapidly evolving and embrace change
- Work with editors to ensure their papers meet their expectations
- Work with Affinity X to ensure papers are designed properly
- Meet all deadlines
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field (can be waived based on experience and demonstrated skills)
- One year of experience in a news environment preferred
- Excellent communication and listening skills, written and verbal
- Strong computer/digital skills with understanding of various platforms and software used in production of the newspaper
- Strong knowledge of AP Style
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop

Compensation: $21-26/hr DOE. $250 recreation bonus available after 6 months employment.
