Essential Functions

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:   

  • Hires, trains, manages, and establishes performance measures and evaluation for municipal court staff.
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing municipal court services. 
  • Develops, updates, and administers written procedural and operational standards manual for the municipal court. 
  • Works collaboratively with the presiding judge to ensure best practices are maintained.
  • Assists police, attorneys, community members, and others who have business with the municipal court.
  • Supervises and assists court staff with a variety of duties for court operations.
  • Provides information and training to court staff, other City employees, and the public regarding court operations. Interacts with the public to resolve difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Coordinates the court calendar and court docket. Supervises the preparation of materials for court sessions and assists the municipal judge in the proceedings of the court.  
  • Maintains confidentiality of court proceedings as required.
  • Sets up and attends court sessions (virtual and in-person), administers court docket, and resolves any issues that arise.
  • Schedules jail transports, language interpreters, and assistant judge coverage when required.
  • Responds and provides discovery for court cases as requested.
  • Prepares court orders, arrest warrants, and any other paperwork as requested by the Judge.
  • Maintains court-related data and prepares reports and updates for the judge, City management team, and/or City Council as requested. 
  • Responsible for the accurate recording of payments, warrants, court rulings, and other legal notices.
  • Reviews and adopts best industry practices through discussion with other municipal court employees and observation of other municipal court procedures.
  • Develops, oversees, and maintains the court budget, monitors expenditures, and keeps presiding judge apprised of budget status.
  • Is responsible for the collection of and accounting for all monies received by the court.
  • Maintains current knowledge of professional standards and practices and changes in applicable state statutes, the Model Traffic Code, and the Lafayette Code of Ordinances.
  • Serves as the records custodian of municipal court records and is responsible for management, maintenance, access, dissemination, destruction, and sealing/expungement of records under applicable local and state laws.
  • Maintains and updates the municipal court website.
  • Attends supervisor and leadership classes and trainings as appropriate.
  • Attends trainings and meetings of the Colorado Association for Municipal Court Administration (CAMCA).
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of administering a municipal court office.

SKILL: Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the duties of the job including the possession of a valid Colorado Driver license. Strong customer service skills including interaction with those who have received citations.

ABILITY: To supervise and coordinate the activities of the municipal court, to exercise sound judgment, evaluate situations and make decisions, establish priorities, set deadlines and complete projects accordingly, adjust to shifts in priorities, learn to interpret and apply a variety of complex organizational policies and procedures, utilize discretion, and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and others.  

TRAINING: Associates degree in business management, criminal justice or related field.

EXPERIENCEFive (5) years of progressively responsible court operations experience with at least three (3) of those years in a supervisory role or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

Special Requirements

 

  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation.  
  • Maintain membership in the Colorado Association for Municipal Court Administration.
