Scholars Unlimited is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality, comprehensive after school and summer learning programs to elementary school children in metro Denver. We collaborate with school districts and generally provide our programs in the schools our students attend. Currently, our programs are offered in Denver, Aurora, Sheridan, and Westminster public schools.

In partnership with the President & CEO, the Accounting Manager will support the finance department with a wide variety of accounting responsibilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reports, maintaining accounting systems, and leading the accounting team to achieve organizational goals. The Accounting Manager will play a critical role in partnering with the leadership team/President’s Cabinet in strategic decision making and operations as Scholars Unlimited continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. This position will report to the President & CEO. 

Key Responsibilities:

Fiscal Management

  • Maintain federal and state compliance and appropriate filings
  • Liaise with external auditors for annual audit and filing the federal and state tax returns, and organization’s 990.  
  • Assist with annual GAAP and single audit assigned.
  • Analyze organizational expenses and develop forecasts to support budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year.
  • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures, as needed. Train staff on procedures appropriate to them
  • Oversee the completion of the full monthly accounting cycle, including prepaids, benefit allocations, AP/AR, and payroll processing.
  • Compile federal reporting materials including analysis and preparation.
  • Prepare journal entries for data entry into MIP.
  • Complete monthly 403B contribution distributions.   
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Human Resources
  • Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third party vendors and consultants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of Scholars Unlimited

Grant Management

  • Manage all fiscal transactions for all state, federal, and foundation grants including monthly invoicing for reimbursable grants; monitor grant expenditures and compare to the approved budgets; provide grant financial status reports, as requested
  • Ensure compliance with all grant and contract provisions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and OMB uniform administrative requirements, cost, principles, and audit requirements for special awards. 
  • Provide timely financial data to Leadership Team 
  • Ensure income and expenses are allocated to the appropriate grants 

Supervisory Duties:

  • Leads, develops, and supports the accounting staff to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations, including delegating work, providing coaching and training, evaluating performance, and addressing performance issues.
  • Carries out all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting, or business management is preferred
  • Extra consideration given to Certified Public Accountants (CPAs)

Experience:

  • Five or more years of experience managing the budget and financial processes of a non-profit organization.
  • Experience invoicing reimbursable local, state, and federal grants/contracts
  • Experience managing revenue and expense allocations, ensuring alignment with grant funding guidelines
  • Experience managing and leading staff 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to Scholars Unlimited’s mission, values, and advancing equitable opportunities for elementary-aged youth, including a commitment to racial equity
  • Knowledge of accounting and reporting software, specifically Sage MIP.
  • Keen analytical, organization and problem solving skills 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships across teams embracing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and cultures
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and credibility
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must complete and pass criminal history background checks prior to the start of employment

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid schedule: Work in the office at least three days per week, with exact days coordinated with the supervisor.
