The City of Littleton is seeking a Grant Accountant to join a dynamic and evolving finance team and play a key role in managing the full lifecycle of grants, from application and administration to reporting and closeout. Position may be filled as Grant Accountant I or Grant Accountant II, depending on qualifications and department needs.
In this position, you’ll work collaboratively with departments citywide to ensure grants are effectively managed, financially sound, and fully compliant with local, state, and federal regulations. You'll serve as a subject matter expert on all things grant-related, helping the city optimize funding opportunities, streamline processes, and maintain accountability.

Hiring pay range for Grant Accountant I level: $63,912 – $67,276 per year
Hiring pay range for Grant Accountant II level: $73,000 – $76,843 per year
This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grant Management
- Utilizes appropriate systems and procedures to assist in applying for grant opportunities.
- Evaluates grant opportunities presented by various departments to ensure alignment with the city’s grant policy and fiscal goals; makes recommendations as needed.
- Manages grants that are awarded to the city utilizing project management skills and best practices.
- Oversee financial and regulatory responsibilities for all city grants.
- Prepares and coordinates submittal of financial reports per various grant requirements.
- Analyzes financial impacts and determines direct and indirect costs to help recapture expenditures.
- Works closely with city staff in various departments to monitor grant spending, reimbursement requests, and tracking.
- Monitors federal and state grant financial activities to ensure compliance with applicable rules, federal and state regulations, and accounting procedures as part of its overall grant management for operational departments and external agencies.
- Provides recommendations, process improvements, and efficiencies on grant policy and procedures
- Troubleshoots and resolves grant administration issues for the city specific to grant budgets, billing, and proposals.
- Facilitates and assists in the grant closeout process.
Grant Process/Systems Administration
- Assists in developing, updating, and maintaining grant administration calendar, and grant applications and proposals.
- Compiles information and assists in completing necessary reports and ensures grant expenditures are on track.
- Updates and maintains grant reporting systems.
- Develops and maintains various grant forms, templates, and processes to facilitate the grants process.
Internal Facilitation/Training
- Facilitates meetings regarding project goals, objectives, timelines, budgets, and ongoing grant management.
- Assists with the development and delivery of all grants-related training.
- Creates, maintains, and updates training materials and presentations for grants training.
- May present to various stakeholders including city council.
- Performs other similar duties and projects as assigned.
- May serve as an emergency worker.
Additional Responsibilities for Grant Accountant II level:
- Provides primary accounting functions and financial reporting for all grant administration, monitoring, and compliance activities for awarded grants through their final closing.
- Processes reimbursements of grant funds, monitors expenditures and invoices, compiles supporting documentation, ensures compliance with grant provisions, terms, and rates, and enters financial transactions into financial systems.
- Audits grant records and transactions, researches and analyzes expenditures and revenues, creates annual grant reports, and closes out grants within financial systems.
- Analyzes grant budgets and set up appropriate line items within the accounting systems; and analyze and help departments maximize the utilization of grant funds.
- Reconciles routine discrepancies regarding journal and financial transactions, reviews, research, and analyzes reporting errors, and creates reports and compiles supporting documents for corrections within financial systems.
- Performs routine audits of financial records and transactions, reviews and matches records and statements to ensure accuracy within financial systems, identifies and researches discrepancies, and resolves or makes recommendations for corrective actions.
- Reviews and analyzes routine grant processes.
- Assists with maintaining the inventory master list, identifies and records capital assets such as equipment, vehicles, structures, and retail concessions, ensures physical descriptions match records, and compiles supporting documentation.
- Assists with conducting special projects with regard to financial transactions, researches and analyzes accounting issues, performs financial calculations, and creates reports and compiles supporting documents for management review.
- Ensures compliance and maintains fiscal accountability with regard to rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications for Grant Accountant I:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field; and
- One (1) year of full-time professional accounting experience, including financial compliance, federal, state, and/or other grant programs; or researching and compiling statistical information; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Minimum Qualifications for Grant Accountant II:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field; and
- Three (3) years of full-time professional accounting experience, including financial compliance, federal, state, and/or other grant programs; or researching and compiling statistical information; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
