The Vice President (VP) of Finance and Administration is a full-time, exempt position responsible for setting The Center’s financial policy and direction and being an active participant and driver of the organization’s overall fiscal strategy. This position requires significant detailed orientation and effective communication skills. The VP of Finance and Administration is a member of the senior staff and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer.

Organization Description

The Center on Colfax has grown to become the largest LGBTQ+ community center in the Rocky Mountain region. The Center is a collaborative leader that positively impacts the lived experience of LGBTQ+ people in Denver and Colorado by creating inclusive programs and events, fostering connections, and leveraging the individual and collective strengths of the community. In addition, the Center produces Denver PrideFest/Parade/Pride 5K, the largest Pride celebration in the Rocky Mountain Region.  

General Description 

The Vice President (VP) of Finance and Administration is a full-time, exempt position responsible for setting The Center’s financial policy and direction and being an active participant and driver of the organization’s overall fiscal strategy. This position requires significant detailed orientation and effective communication skills. The VP of Finance and Administration is a member of the senior staff and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Financial Management

  • Develops and manages annual operating budget. Works with CEO, senior staff, and Center department leadership to create and implement annual budget. Develops operational metrics both internally and externally to monitor income and expenses. 
  • Oversees, reviews, and maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitors use of all funds.  
  • Responsible for internal control policies and procedures related to accounting and financial matters. 
  • Prepares and presents monthly financial statements to CEO, Board Finance Committee and Center Board of Directors. 
  • Manages cash flow, fund investments and forecasting. 
  • Oversees Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, month-end and year-end close process. 
  • Manages relationship with Accounting consultant team. 
  • Manages banking and investment advisor relationships.  
  • Works with CEO and Finance Committee to manage operational reserves and endowment. 
  • Oversees organizational and board insurance policies. 
  • Oversees annual audit, completion of 990 tax returns, and prepares state regulatory filings.  
  • Reports, tracks and supports the management of individual program budgets in collaboration with program managers. 
  • Works with fundraising team to create budgets for grant applications. 
  • Tracks financial data in coordination with fundraising team for financial reporting to funders including government funders as necessary. 
  • Works with fundraising team to track payments for special event sponsorships. 
  • Manages financial operations for Denver PrideFest, AP/AR pre and post event.  

Human Resource Management

  • Processes semi-monthly payroll. 
  • Coordinates annual benefits renewal with benefits broker. 
  • Manages The Center’s 403b employee retirement accounts, and files form 5500. 
  • Manages relationship with HR consultant, collaborating on employee changes, maintaining HRIS platform, and documenting accordingly.  

Qualifications

· Business or Accounting degree is required; master’s in business administration is preferred 

· CPA preferred 

· Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior management role ideally with both external audit and in-house financial management experience 

· Experience either as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization; must be familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations 

· Strong proficiency in Microsoft 365 especially Excel 

· Experience with QuickBooks, QuickBooks Online preferred 

· Experience with BILL AP/AR and integration with QuickBooks Online preferred 

· Experience with HRIS platforms with Paylocity preferred 

· Experience with cash handling and equipment 

· Self-reliant, good problem solver, detail oriented 

· Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives 

· Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, The Center’s board of directors, and staff 

· Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker 

· Passion for The Center’s mission 

· Passing a criminal history background check 

Working Conditions

  • Frequent use of computers, standard office equipment, Microsoft office suite on PCs  
  • Frequent giving, receiving, and analyzing of information  
  • Work in a loud, fast paced and continually evolving professional environment  
  • Must be available to work Denver PrideFest on the fourth weekend every June 
  • Will work in outside areas  
  • Expected to work extended hours as needed  
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required 
  • Occasional lifting up to 35 pounds, with reasonable accommodation 
  • Work in hybrid, physical and virtual, environment, as necessary 
  • As part of Finance & Administrative, shares responsibility for the safety and security of physical plant and online platforms
