What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $111,920 – $143,210. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. This position may require availability outside of standard business hours. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.
What You’ll Do

The Denver Human Service (DHS) Marketing and Communications team informs and engages employees, customers and community partners. The team supports all areas of DHS to effectively tell the stories of our customers and team members, while inspiring narratives and engagement around the department’s strategic goals. The team also serves as creative thought partners, working closely with the Executive Management Team, Mayor’s Office, internal divisions, and other citywide communications teams.
The Public Information Officer will be an organizational leader responsible for responding to and coordinating media inquiries in multiple languages, managing public records requests related to media, representing the department, and helping prepare team members for press interviews. The selected candidate will be a part of the Marketing and Communications leadership team which includes supervision and management of staff. This position will also handle day-to-day media relations including researching issues, interviewing, and preparing subject matter experts as well as crisis communications. This role is a part of our language access efforts, and will help ensure that our communications are inclusive, accessible, clear and concise in multiple languages across both grassroots and mass media.
Media Relations

Work cross functionally to develop, create, and implement media strategies
-
Develop and maintain working relationships with members of the media, community organizations and community leaders/influencers
-
Serve as the main spokesperson for the department in media interviews
-
Gather information to respond to media requests by consulting with staff
-
Oversee complex crisis management and/or communications during emergency situations by managing and responding to media requests and reporting on crisis communications efforts
Leadership
-
Provide team leadership support, including supervising staff
-
Develop and manage metrics reports and outcomes for marketing, communications and/or media strategies
-
Help create and maintain standard work processes among divisions across the agency
Monitoring Media and Social Media
-
Track news and social media that affects the department
-
Collaborate with the marketing and communication team to correct any inaccuracies in news stories or online content
-
Oversee all public information/CORA requests, media, and public inquiries. Assure legal compliance in all areas affecting public access to information
Communications and Multimedia
-
Prepare departmental publications and materials for various audiences
-
Develop and execute multilingual public awareness campaigns, with a focus on both grassroots and mass media efforts
-
Develop and maintain working relationships with members of multicultural media, community organizations and community leaders/influencers

Create videos and podcasts for various external audiences
-
Work with colleagues to ensure all content is accurate and culturally inclusive
Marketing and Communications

Handle day-to-day media relations including researching issues, interviewing, and preparing subject matter experts as well as crisis communications
-
Develop and manage integrated marketing and communications campaigns and act as a conduit between colleagues and internal stakeholders
-
Develop and edit communications, informational materials, and other related documents. Additionally, update content calendar, and disseminate information across multiple DHS channels to expand visibility and reach

Remain aware of current industry trends on a variety of platforms and promote internal and external agency initiatives

Develop, enhance or revise marketing collateral for web, print or other media channels
-
Develop and maintain the budget for marketing and/or public relations programs/campaigns. Approve and monitor allocations and expenditures
Outreach and Public Affairs

Assist in planning and managing departmental events like news conferences and community outreach
-
Establish and maintain good working relationships with media representatives, community and business organizations, and other stakeholders
-
Serve as a city representative on various committees and foster collaborative relationships that benefit the organization
Other Duties as Assigned

Attend meetings and training sessions

Perform other related duties as assigned

Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a citywide emergency declared by the Mayor
What You’ll Bring
We are looking for candidates with outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse environment. Individuals should have strong research, editing, leadership and organizational skills. We are also looking for dynamic candidates who are proactive, strategic, collaborative, have an approachable demeanor, and who value accuracy, transparency, and building relationships. Ability to speak and write in Spanish is highly preferred.
In addition, we are looking for some or all the following skills and experience:

At least four years of experience in communications with proven experience in media relations, social media, writing and executing strategic communications plans and crisis communications

Experience developing relationships with local and state media
-
Experience managing crisis communications situations
-
Experience developing communications plans and programs to support strategies and goals
-
Experience leading communications teams
-
Experience working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multitask and have a strong attention to detail
-
Proven ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments
-
Knowledge of City, County, State and Federal statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, administrative policies and other operational guidelines and directives pertaining to local government operations

Highly Preferred: Ability to speak and write in Spanish
Required Minimum Qualifications

Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or a related field
-
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience at the type and level of functional or operational management, which must have included supervision of marketing and/or communications professionals
-
Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

Licensure: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
