The Athletics department encourages applications for the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications! This role will develop and implement communication strategies within the Athletic Communications office for the University of Colorado Boulder Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Working with the women's basketball program as the primary communications contact and serving as the primary contact for additional sport assignments, to ensure all communications strategies and execution fit within the broader context of the department, University, conference, and NCAA goals and compliance requirements. This position is responsible for creating media guides, game notes, news releases, maintaining statistics and records, staffing practices and serving as the liaison between the media and the sport program. This position will also work closely with coaches and student-athletes to cultivate original content, including feature stories, that can be used on CU Athletics channels as well as pitched to the media, increasing coverage of the program and its student-athletes.

This position is also responsible for the CU Athletics Communications department's student assistant program, including recruitment, hiring prospective student workers, scheduling them for events throughout the academic year, and overseeing their work progress to ensure they are fulfilling the duties needed by the department. Have a lead role within assigned sports in the areas of content planning and execution, media relations, gameday management, publications, and archiving.

The position is responsible for conducting all activities in compliance with conference, NCAA and University rules and regulations and is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program. This includes adhering to the principles of the Athletic Department’s Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Big 12 Conference, and the NCAA.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Women's Basketball – Athletic Communications
 

  • Serve as the primary communications contact for the women's basketball program. Act as the primary media contact and coordinate all media relations efforts, including press releases, media advisories, interview requests, press conferences, media training, credentialing, and game-day media operations.
  • Work alongside creative content teams in the areas of video, photography, graphic design, and digital content to develop and implement comprehensive communication plans that promote the program and student-athletes.
  • Maintain biographies, rosters, schedules, statistics, results, and historical records while coordinating with conference and national offices to ensure accurate and timely sharing of information.
  • Produce game notes, record books, media guides, game programs, postseason materials, and other publications.
  • Serve as the lead game-day communications administrator, overseeing media operations, credentialing, statistics distribution, press areas, and postgame materials. Maintain and preserve the historical archive of documents, statistics, photos, and videos related to the program.
  • Assist coaching staff as needed in the areas of recruiting support, historical information, and statistical research.
  • Work closely with coaching staff to cultivate and produce original content, including feature stories that can be used to promote the program. Pitch to stories to media on a regular basis.
     

Other Sport Assignments – Athletic Communications
 

  • Serve as the primary communications contact for one or more additional varsity sports. Serve as the primary media contact and coordinate all communication and publicity efforts for assigned sports.
  • Serve as game-day communications manager in the areas of media relations, statistics generation, and press operations.
  • Produce various publications including record books, statistics reports, game programs, postseason materials, and other sport-specific publications.
  • Maintain biographies, rosters, schedules, statistics, and results. Work with conference and national offices to ensure accurate reporting and dissemination of information.
  • Serve as lead archivist for assigned sports and maintain historical records including documents, statistics, photos, and videos. Assist coaching staffs as needed in the areas of scouting, recruiting support, and historical research.
     

Student Assistant Program – Oversight and Administrative Duties
 

  • Coordinate student assistant coverage for athletic events and departmental needs while fostering professional development opportunities within the communications field.
  • Assist with department-wide communications initiatives and support other varsity sports as needed.
  • Help coordinate office operations and special projects.
  • Assist in maintaining department archives and records for all sports and serve as a resource for historical information, statistics, and publications.
     

What You Should Know

This position works onsite 5 day/week during standard business hours, 8am-5pm. Occasional nights and weekend games, events or travel might be required.

What We Require
 

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Sports Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of related professional experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
     

What You Will Need
 

  • Strong working knowledge of statistics and rules of various collegiate sports.
  • Standard skills in MS Word, Excel, In-Design, Photoshop and other typical applications.
  • Solid understanding of social media trends and social media tools including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
     

What We Would Like You To Have
 

  • Three to five years of professional experience in a collegiate or professional sports environment.
  • Experience producing publications, game notes, record books, and media materials.
  • Experience serving as the primary communications contact for NCAA Division I women's basketball.
  • Experience with NCAA statistics systems and records management.
  • Experience supervising student employees, interns, or full-time staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Established relationships with local, regional, and national media members.
  • Experience managing media operations for postseason competition and championship events.
  • Experience working in a Power Four/Autonomy Five athletic department.
  • Strong written and editorial experience including website content, media relations materials, and print publications.
  • Any background in building graphics welcomed, but not required.
