The Opportunity: Communications and Digital Engagement Specialist
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking a full-time, 40 hours per week, Communications and Digital Engagement Specialist to facilitate HSBV’s communication and digital outreach efforts. This role is responsible for gathering and creating content for the organization’s digital communication platforms, email outreach, social media sites, and the execution of these multi-channel communication campaigns.
 
The specialist is also a critical collaborator – facilitating the creation of multi-media content to highlight HSBV’s life-saving work and services. Through thoughtful use of data and digital systems, this role identifies opportunities and informs communication strategies to strengthen community awareness of the Humane Society’s programs, services, events, and animal support opportunities. The specialist reports to the Communications and Community Relations Manager and works closely with program representatives across the organization.

Summary of Responsibilities
Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations

  • Lead the execution and production of communications and promotional campaigns for programs and departments including but not limited to using desktop publishing design and layout to create flyers, graphics, signage, fundraising appeals, and community events.
  • Track return on investment (ROI) of communication campaign efforts to better inform future campaigns.
  • Assist with drafting and distribution of press releases, media alerts and pitches to local and regional media partners and outlets.
  • Assist with coordination of on-site media visits and interviews.

Digital Engagement

  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate webpage content that effectively communicates HSBV services and animal welfare messages to reach the appropriate target audiences.
  • Offer recommendations to email, web and social media content strategy, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Assist other departments in identifying and determining their respective website and social media content, design, and communication needs.
  • Provide current and timely updates to social media platforms and appropriate webpages.
  • Post social media content to drive engagement and HSBV support.
  • Track and report on email, website and social media analytics (via Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, and other tools).
  • Serve as a brand steward on design, web content and social media standards, processes, and guidelines, while ensuring compliance with them.
  • Demonstrate email, website, and social media best practices.
  • Monitor HSBV’s reputation management channels (google reviews, etc.) and coordinate responses with impacted departments, as needed.

Qualifications
Education/Experience

  • At least one year of experience in communications, digital content curation, public relations, or related fields. Experience with animal welfare or nonprofit preferred.
  • Communications degree or applicable certification(s) preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of email, social media and website metrics, and algorithms.
  • Experience distilling complex information into clear, concise, and compelling messages for various audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of mass communication strategies and best practices.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, learning about animal welfare topics, and commitment to HSBV’s mission.
  • Working knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) practices and HTML preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (familiarity with Associated Press Stylebook, is a plus).
  • Meticulous with attention to accuracy. Copy-editing experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple projects to meet competing and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Familiar with graphic file types and tools such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator software, with a desire to learn additional applications and technology as needed.
  • Experience with Mailchimp or similar CRM platform, preferred.
  • Experience with WordPress (or similar website platforms) and social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Working Conditions
The work environment is primarily an office setting, with regular computer and phone use. Frequent exposure to animals; potential for animal bites and scratches, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning agents. Occasional lifting up to 40 lbs., and regular physical activity including walking, standing, bending, and stooping. Periodic driving of HSBV vehicles may be required.

The anticipated pay range for this position is $25.00 to $28.00 per hour. This pay range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this role and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, additional training/certifications for preferred skills, and education. Included in the compensation package:
