Salary Range: $155,000 – $175,000 annually plus bonuses. Salary will be dependent upon multiple factors. 

Summary: The Director of Planning is responsible for all aspects of leading the Planning Business Unit to include business planning and budgeting, identifying market opportunities, leading CRM activities, business development, program and project management, group operations, resource management, and staffing.   

Essential Functions:

  • Technical Expertise in Planning – Serve as a subject matter expert capable of self-performing technical work and consulting on programs and projects nationwide. Leverage your expertise to grow and expand business opportunities within your area of specialization.
  • Project and Program Management – Provide leadership and direction for projects by developing technical strategies, managing schedules and budgets, and ensuring high-quality deliverables. Responsibilities include assembling and guiding project teams, conducting quality control, overseeing client communications, and engaging with regulatory agencies and project stakeholders.
  • Marketing and Business Development – Lead the development and execution of the Planning Center of Excellence’s business and marketing strategies. Identify and pursue new business opportunities, expand the client base through industry reputation and relationships, lead major proposals and interviews, and actively participate in professional organizations to enhance Matrix’s visibility.
  • Leadership and Development of the Planning Practice – Provide senior-level mentoring and leadership to planning staff across offices. Support senior leaders in staffing, program execution, and project delivery. Drive team performance by communicating vision, inspiring staff, ensuring quality, maximizing profitability, and aligning with the broader Matrix leadership team.
  • Corporate Contributions – Promote and represent all Matrix Design Group services to support cross-discipline growth and business development. Help achieve corporate goals by contributing to overall profitability and marketing initiatives, and by fostering collaboration across service lines.

Education and Experience:

  • 15+ years of progressive planning experience with at least 10 years in the private sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning or related planning and landscape architecture field; master’s degree preferred. 
  • Proven senior leadership experience with a track record of successful project and program management and operations.
  • AICP certification required.
  • Management of a planning group or planning organization.
  • Business development and marketing experience.
  • Experience in the development of proposals and requests for qualifications. 
  • Extensive knowledge in community, land use, transportation, military, compatibility, planning policy, code/zoning rewrites, redevelopment planning, and general planning.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to travel to project/client sites and other Matrix locations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
