The Business Incubator Center (BIC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986. BIC is a key pillar of economic development in Mesa County and the surrounding region. BIC aims to diversify the economy through its nationally and internationally award-winning programs geared toward fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses. Our mission is to support the launch, growth, stabilization, and long-term success of business enterprises in Mesa County and the surrounding region. We measure our success by our ability to guide entrepreneurs through sound business decisions and our positive influence on economic growth in the region.

Position Description:

The Director of PR, Communications, and Marketing will create, implement, and manage BIC’s marketing, communications, and public relations (PR) strategies to promote BIC’s mission, programs, and community impact. This role supports BIC’s strategic goals by developing content, fostering brand awareness, protecting the BIC brand, and driving engagement across multiple channels. The Director works closely with the CEO and collaborates with program directors and the team to align PR, communications, and marketing efforts with BIC’s broader organizational objectives. The ideal candidate will be proactive, have a go-getter positive attitude, is highly adaptable and flexible, and have an entrepreneurial mindset to thrive in BIC’s fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Agility in Marketing and Brand Strategy

Develop, implement, and lead flexible marketing, PR, and communication strategies that can be adjusted to align with BIC’s evolving goals and initiatives. Ensure that all efforts enhance BIC’s visibility and community impact.

  • Budget Management

Develop a marketing budget, monitor expenses, and adjust as needed to align with organizational priorities throughout the fiscal year.

  • Content Creation and Management

Create a content calendar to share BIC news, success stories, program updates, and opportunities through digital and traditional media. Produce and oversee content for newsletters, press releases, social media, website, and email communications to engage the community and stakeholders.

  • Public Relations, Media Plan, and Crisis Communication

Develop and manage a media plan, including media buys, advertising schedules, and placements. Craft press releases, develop and maintain media contacts, and coordinate media coverage to increase visibility of BIC’s programs and success stories. Develop crisis communication strategies to protect BIC’s reputation and ensure timely, transparent communication during unforeseen events.

  • Strategic Planning and Collaboration with Leadership

Work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to align marketing, communications, and PR strategies with BIC’s organizational goals and strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborative Problem-Solving

Engage in collaborative problem-solving with BIC team members to respond to emerging challenges and optimize marketing and PR efforts in a changing landscape.

  • Data-Driven Marketing and Rapid Feedback Loops

Build and monitor metrics across PR, communications, and marketing activities. Establish rapid feedback loops to quickly assess the effectiveness of campaigns, allowing for timely adjustments to maximize impact. Prepare reports for the CEO, board, and key stakeholders.

  • Collateral Development

Create collateral materials, including brochures, annual reports, event invitations, digital assets, and presentations, ensuring they align with BIC’s goals and message.

  • Community Outreach and Engagement

Build relationships with community leaders, local businesses, and influencers to promote BIC’s role in economic development and foster partnerships. Represent BIC at community events and other forums as needed.

  • Event Marketing and Promotion

Collaborate with staff to develop marketing and communication plans for key events, such as the Small Business Expo, annual retreats, and community-focused programs. Manage all related materials, including invitations, press releases, programs, advertisements, presentations, and email communications.

  • Social Media and Digital Presence

Handle BIC’s social media and digital platforms, regularly updating content and engaging with the community. Implement SEO strategies for the website and manage content updates to maximize BIC’s digital reach. Stay current with emerging marketing trends and digital innovations.

  • Monthly Newsletter

Develop a monthly community newsletter to provide timely and relevant information, promoting awareness and engagement among stakeholders.

  • Stakeholder Communications and Investor Relations

Coordinate with the CEO to create targeted communications for BIC stakeholders, including leads, prospects, board members, and investors. Ensure investors and partners receive benefits and recognitions, such as spotlight features and website acknowledgment.

  • Cross-Internal and External Communication Materials

Create and implement communication materials that effectively convey BIC’s mission, values, and key initiatives to both internal stakeholders (staff, board members) and external audiences (clients, partners, community members). Ensure consistent messaging and alignment across all touchpoints to strengthen organizational cohesion and public engagement.

  • Vendor and Partner Management

Manage relationships with external service providers where necessary, including but not limited to photographers, videographers, graphic designers, web designers, and media sales representatives, to support BIC’s goals.

  • Market Research and Case Studies

Conduct market research, gather insights on consumer trends, and create case studies as needed to support BIC’s strategic planning and outreach.

  • Directory and Inventory Management

Design and maintain a directory and inventory of marketing and communications materials, ensuring resources are current and accessible. Creating and maintaining a directory of current clients and alumni.

  • Spokesperson Role

Act as a spokesperson for BIC in media interviews, community forums, and at events when the CEO is unavailable.

  • Awards and Recognition Opportunities

Identify and pursue award and recognition opportunities for BIC, its clients, and local businesses, showcasing contributions to economic growth and innovation.

  • Fundraising Communication and Support for Partner Organizations

Assist with fundraising communication needs for capital campaigns, grant applications, and donor outreach, ensuring messaging aligns with BIC’s mission and values. Support BIC’s partner organizations, clients, and economic development partners with PR, marketing, and collateral development as needed.

  • Other Duties and Event Support

Perform additional tasks as needed to support BIC’s mission and operational goals, including assisting with logistics and execution of major annual events such as the Small Business Expo and other high-profile organization-wide events.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be a passionate advocate for Colorado’s Western Slope and the mission of the Business Incubator Center (BIC).
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, with the ability to develop meaningful relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and program participants.

  • Up-to-date knowledge of digital marketing trends, including SEO, social media best practices, and new digital platforms.
  • Highly adaptable and with an entrepreneurial mindset and proactive approach to identifying new marketing opportunities.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field required. Advanced education or certification preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • At least four years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, or public relations preferred.

· Experience with data systems specifically Salesforce, HubSpot, and Tableau preferred.

  • Experience in economic & business development or nonprofit marketing is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical Demands – Sitting: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk (often 6–8 hours/day). Repetitive Tasks: Frequent typing, data entry, and mouse use. Vision Requirements: Sustained focus on a screen for extended periods. Light Lifting: Occasionally lifting or moving office supplies, boxes of paper, or files (usually under 20 lbs).
  • Ability to travel within Mesa County and occasionally longer distances.
  • Onsite position, no remote.

Other:

  • Full-time, exempt position that may require early mornings, evenings, and weekends based on organizational needs.
  • Salary range is $63,000–$69,000 per year, with an excellent benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, paid time off, sick leave, and retirement plan.
