The Copywriter is responsible for writing engaging, dynamic, and brand-aligned copy across a variety of media. This role ensures that all content maintains a consistent brand voice while effectively reaching and engaging diverse audiences. This role collaborates across departments to deliver impactful messaging that supports marketing, education, philanthropic initiatives, conservation efforts, and more. While primarily focused on external communications, the role also contributes to internal initiatives and helps establish and support the external voice of the CEO through select executive communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Content Development

  • Write clear, compelling, and brand-consistent copy for a wide variety of channels, including broadcast, print, digital, social, video, advertising, email, and signage.
  • Translate complex or scientific information into accessible and engaging language for broad public audiences.
  • Develop messaging for integrated campaigns that promote the Zoo’s programs, offerings, and conservation initiatives.

Brand & Voice Stewardship

  • Maintain the organization’s tone and style guidelines to ensure consistency across all content.
  • Ensure all written materials reflect the voice, values, and mission of Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance.
  • Adapt writing style and tone to suit different audiences and communication goals.

Collaboration & Cross-Department Support

  • Collaborate with internal teams, including marketing, PR, internal communications, education, philanthropy, conservation, and guest experience, to support a range of projects.
  • Work with creative teams (designers, video producers, etc.) to deliver cohesive, compelling content.
  • Support urgent or special communications projects as needed.

Executive & Internal Communications

  • Assist in crafting select executive content, including speeches, op-eds, letters, and public statements on behalf of the CEO.
  • Contribute to internal communication materials that support employee engagement and organizational updates.

Editing & Quality Control

  • Edit and proofread copy for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and alignment with brand standards.
  • Ensure all content meets the organization’s strategic communication objectives.

Continuous Improvement & Strategic Contribution

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, audience behaviors, and best practices to continually refine content strategies.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in brainstorming or ideation sessions for campaigns, content series, or editorial calendars.
  • Assist in identifying storytelling opportunities or new formats (e.g., testimonials, blog posts, video scripts).
  • Assist with organizing and maintaining content libraries, templates, or asset folders.
  • Conduct background research on programs, species, conservation topics, or partner organizations.
  • Fact-check content to ensure accuracy and credibility of published materials
  • Support internal training or guidance around voice, tone, and messaging for staff who write or communicate publicly.
  • Help develop or maintain writing toolkits and resources for non-writers.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and creative team culture through participation in internal meetings, critiques, or idea shares
  • Support mandatory team events through attendance and participation
  • Other assistance, as designated by the Creative Manager, to support the overall goals of the department and organization. DZCA retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
  • Acts as a good steward for DZCA resources.
  • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance.
  • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.

Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Communications, Copywriting, or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional copywriting experience in an in-house marketing/communications team, agency setting, or equivalent environment.
  • Direct experience writing for multiple channels, including digital (web, email, social), print collateral, and video or advertising scripts.
  • Experience supporting brand messaging and marketing campaigns from concept through execution.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in a mission-driven, nonprofit, or public-serving organization preferred.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as design, public relations, education, philanthropy, or executive leadership.
  • Experience producing content within established brand guidelines and adapting voice/tone for different audiences.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a solid understanding of grammar, AP style, and brand voice development.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience working with project management tools (e.g., Basecamp), email platforms (e.g., WordFly or similar), and CMS (e.g., WordPress).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Experience adapting messaging for diverse audiences, platforms, and strategic objectives.
  • Familiarity with marketing and communications best practices, particularly in nonprofit or public-serving organizations.
  • Comfortable providing and receiving feedback in a creative team setting.
  • Spanish fluency or professional bilingual experience is a plus, but not required.

Position Conditions

  • Ability to pass a physical examination, background check, and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Schedule Availability: Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Work Location: On campus 

Compensation 

The salary range for this position is $5,037 – $6,171 (monthly).
