What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The target salary range for this position is $124,937 – $155,000. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:
- A guaranteed life-long monthly pension, once vested after 5 years of service

- 140 hours of PTO earned within first year + 11 paid holidays, 1 personal holiday and 1 volunteer day per year

Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site at least three (3) days per week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.
Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a City-wide emergency declared by the mayor.

At Denver Human Services (DHS), we envision a healthy community where people are connected, supported, safe and well. One in three people in Denver turn to DHS for support at all stages of life. Our employees help children, at-risk adults, families, and individuals navigate social and economic pressures by connecting them to services and experts who support their overall well-being.
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a key leader at DHS, who will help fulfill the DHS mission and Strategic Roadmap. This person will oversee the team that supports all areas of DHS to connect with Denver communities and effectively tell the stories of our customers and staff.
Additionally, the Marketing and Communications team serves as a creative thought partner, working closely with the DHS Executive Management Team, the Mayor’s Office, and other city-wide communications teams. The leader of Marketing and Communications will have experience engaging diverse community voices, an understanding of essential services, strong people leader skills, and the ability to convey the breadth of opportunities that DHS supports. This network of opportunities range from connecting people to food, health care, childcare, child and at-risk adult protection, child support, employment support and other essential services to support the health and wellbeing of Denver residents.
About the Position: Director of Marketing and Communications
This position will work with senior leaders, support community facing meetings and presentations, and manage strategies to promote the agency’s mission and vision. Key Components and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee, lead, and evaluate the performance of the Marketing and Communications team, comprised of six communications and marketing professionals. This role requires strong situational leadership, emotional intelligence, and people leader skills, as well as the ability to help the team prioritize projects and maintain effective time management practices.
- Serve as a Marketing and Communications advisor to a diversity of internal and external partners such as the DHS Executive Director, community and city partners, city-wide communications, and the Mayor’s Office.
- Protect and promote a cohesive and compelling brand identity for Denver Human Services in alignment with our Strategic Roadmap.
- Leverage information across multiple platforms to maximize access, reach and ease.
- Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring, and active team leadership, while providing opportunities for staff development and growth.
- Drive strategy and projects for both internal and external marketing while communicating the DHS mission, vision, and Strategic Roadmap through meaningful engagements with the community and DHS staff.
- Demonstrate strong writing skills with correct usage and an accurate, concise, and compelling style. This includes appropriate cultural and linguistic considerations for diverse audiences and reading levels, as well as a strong sense of empathy for DHS customers and clients.
- Engage in public speaking, including community meetings, townhalls, presentations, and broadcast media appearances.
- Help lead strategic campaign work and strategies.
- Oversees Public Information Officer and media relations duties. May serve as a backup Spokesperson or Public Information Officer for Denver Human Services.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
- Experience with bilingual or multilingual marketing and communications and/or proficiency in another language. Strong awareness and attention to cultural sensitivity.
- Excellent project management capabilities. Skilled in managing multiple projects simultaneously, delegating tasks, and meeting deadlines.
- An ability and experience establishing and maintaining relationships with community, other government departments, and the media.
- Developing and managing Key Performance Indicators and outcomes for a communications and marketing team.
- Direct experience managing a marketing and communications team in a government setting, including experience in media relations and crisis communications, serving as a Spokesperson or Public Information Officer.
- Strong relationship building skills, and an ability to provide inspiring counsel to other leaders and teams. Demonstrated experience modeling empathy and inclusivity.
- Experience incorporating community voices. Experience supporting equity and inclusion through marketing and communications.
- The ability to lead a team through crisis and conflict, and to respond to local, state, or national emergencies.
- Familiarity with marketing and communication technologies.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience Requirement: Five (5) years of experience at the type and level of functional or operational management, which must have included management of marketing and/or communications supervisors.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: Two (2) years of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
