Who We Are

The OEM team has an opening for a Communications and Outreach Specialist. This position will be responsible for the communications and outreach for the DenverREADY program with the Denver OEM. The position will be focused on growing the DenverREADY program to increase emergency preparedness and resilience for all Denver residents. The position will serve as a back-up PIO for the agency and will assist with emergency operations and communications as needed

Denver Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM) mission is to lead Denver’s emergency management efforts to cultivate safe, prepared, and resilient communities. Denver OEM is responsible for coordinating the City and County of Denver’s efforts to prepare for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from all natural, technological, and human-caused hazards and threats impacting Denver’s residents, businesses, and community organizations. Denver OEM does this by providing operational support, planning, training, exercises, public information, and community outreach prior to, during, and after a local emergency or declared disaster. What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $90,000.00-$104,000.00. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but is not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work on site 3 days a week and 2 remote days. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

What You’ll Do

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Maintain and manage a team of 7 outreach trainers who are responsible for instructing monthly DenverREADY and DenverLISTO classes. This includes recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training new Outreach Trainers as needed.

· Develops, coordinates, and executes new outreach efforts and initiatives involving community partners and businesses in the greater Denver area.

· Conduct trainings and outreach activities as needed.

· Monitor and track attendance of preparedness classes. Work to find creative and innovative ways to further engage the public in participating in the DenverREADY program.

· Build and maintain relationships with various established communities, stakeholders, and community partners in the greater Denver area to schedule additional outreach events and activities. Specific focus on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in outreach efforts will be vital to this role.

· Maintain an excel calendar of existing outreach activities and community events, as well as other opportunities the outreach trainers and OEM staff can sign up for.

· Work closely with the Communications Manager on growing National Preparedness Month activities in September.

· Promote outreach activities utilizing social media, Nextdoor, and grassroots marketing efforts. Will also be required to conduct as-needed media interviews on outreach efforts.

· Serve as the back-up PIO for the agency.

· Serves in the Joint Information Center (JIC) activations, which may occur outside of normal working hours, and provides subject-matter expertise to the JIC products and processes.

· Performs 24/7 on-call duty officer functions on a rotating weekly basis with other OEM staff. Must be able to respond anywhere within the city within one hour when on call.

· Perform operational duties in the field at leadership's discretion.

· Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Director, Deputy Director.

About You

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

· Experience in outreach, communications, program management.

· Great ability to build and maintain strong relationships with community and business partners.

· Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with senior management, various agencies within the city, and members of the public.

· Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

· Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral and visual media.

· Bilingual

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or a related field.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of full performance, professional level experience performing marketing and/or public relations, community relations functions including research and analysis, developing public announcements and publications, and developing marketing and/or public relations strategies.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
