PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring salary: $47,611.54 – $59,514.43

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

Plans, develops, organizes, implements, and oversees Temporary Use Permits as well as volunteer events in the Parks & Open Space Department, as well as other special events and volunteer events in response to division needs.  This position reports to the Manager of Business Services.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as liaison to internal and external event applications while coordinating special event permitting activities throughout the city organization.
  • Creates, edits, submits for approval, and manages well-written communication materials for use on the website.
  • Disseminate special event information across departments within the city, and serve as point of contact for permit questions, requests, and issues from event organizers, public and city leadership.
  • Manages workflow process and recommends process improvements.
  • Develops, directs, and coordinates existing and new special events and temporary use permits.   
  • Serves as support for existing events.
  • Coordinates and implements program support functions including recruitment, training, placement, recognition, and evaluation of events, establish and maintain volunteer database.
  • Provide leadership and support to those involved in development and implementation of special events.
  • Develops and makes presentations to various community groups to promote events and solicit support.
  • Facilitates the interaction of city agencies with special event producers in the private sector.
  • Keeps high awareness of the events planning and permits going on throughout the department and the city.
  • Establishes relationships with sponsors, neighborhood organizations, local builders and businesses, and any other organizations having an association with special events.
  • Maintains an ongoing outdoor special event calendar.
  • Stays current on city regulations and procedures and provides this information to event organizers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in parks, leisure services, natural resource related facilities, management, communications, marketing, public relations, special event management, or a directly related field. 

Experience:

  • At least 2 years park/leisure services, resource-related management experience, or communications/special event management or promotion. 
  • Outdoor, park, or reservoir-related experience is a plus.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Colorado Driver's License with good driving history.  This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • None

 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of managing park, reservoir, or leisure related facilities and sites.
  • Program development, and administration.
  • Principles and practices of special events operations, marketing, and promotion.

Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens.
  • Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and instruct recreation programs.
  • Work occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.

Skills: 

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in computer operation and software needed for this position.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Sedentary to moderate physical work depending upon assignment.
  • May require lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • May require regular standing and walking.
  • May require bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard.
  • May require foot/eye coordination for operation of motor vehicle.
  • Vision to read reports and other written material.
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment: 

  • Works primarily in an office environment.

Equipment Used: 

  • Personal computer; operation of motor vehicle.
